That’s simply not true about not being able to take a feed from the main beam due to “the CAN bus” and needing a module to give an output.
The headlamps are not signalled to operate via CAN bus messages, they are hard wired from the CJB. Even on the last D4
From the research i did when fitting the Lazer spots to mine it all pointed to not being able to hack into the MB wiring, the MB is always on and shutter moves to dip/full beam, always happy to stand corrected.
They way I wired them in and it works perfectly (I didn't require a separate "on" switch mind) was to switch the relay that powers the additional spots from a signal taken from the can bus (using a canm8 electronic really)at the onboard diagnostics port in the footwell

The main beam wire is indeed used by the Xenon lamp to decide when to move the shutter, but it's still a wire that's at 12V when the main beam is on.
It's not a CAN or another other kind of bus signal.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I just T'd into the main beam power feed on the Offside headlight to trip a relay to turn the spotlights on, and passed the -ve feed for the relay activation through the additional switch so the spots will only come on with high beam and the switch on.
All MOT friendly and no CANBUS involved - easy.

@Nasher
on the basis on what you have said can you give me some guidance as to what I need to wire where please.
Here is the relay which is in and working at the moment
You also mentioned that I need to use the switch on the -ve part of the circuit to also have the switch light up
@martin very kindly explained the switch earlier:
1: Switched Ground Out (Grounded when switch pressed down)
2: Illumination +12V
3: (Internally connected to 4)
4: Ground
5: Spotlight positive (illuminates orange LED when spots on)
which pins do I need to use?
(presume I can connect PIN 2 to another switch LED so it lights up with the other instruments??)
Thanks very much - your knowledge will save me a lot of guessing!!!!!formerly Disco3Ben

considering switch locations
Think I'd like it to go here:
but looks to be too much stuff behind that position, but I will have a closer explore.
Another option is to mount it slightly higher up:
quick look earlier and seems to be enough space to fit it here.
Needs further investigation I think.......formerly Disco3Ben
