Introduction
If your tailgate release button makes the right noises but doesn't open the tailgate then it is likely that the end of the latch release cable will have broken. If you don't get the noises you likely need a new external handle.
This can mean that your tailgate is stuck shut, tailgate stuck closed and your tailgate won't open.
Check the official LR diagnostic checksheet for tailgate issues (TSB LTB00191) to help determine what exact problem you have.
If you do need to replace the cable, read on. See Tailgate Handle for replacing the external handle assembly.
Replacement
A replacement latch and cable is around £26 (October 2011 price) - part number LR017470.
This part is modified from the original, with a redesigned end:

See the TSB above or Word document for details of releasing the tailgate trim panel.
Repair
Rather than replace, you can also repair the cable end using a small Allen key, like the ones supplied with disposable flat pack furniture (e.g. IKEA). For more, see member chocolademan's PDF write up. Member crwoody had a similar idea using coat hanger wire.
Adding an Emergency Release
An internal emergency release can be added if you want in case of further problems, see:
- crwoody's string method
- wiggs' cable tie method
