Hi Bill

Yes perfectly possible to trade in a PX but most or all of the value of it will disappear in reduced payments over the term. So at the end you have no deposit.

At the end the same options apply.

Age limits: usually yes but they will vary. "Approved used" cars almost always available on PCPs. Often a new car is a better deal if it has manufacturer supported finance or "deposit contributions" aka discounts

My two D3's were both bought on PCP's but in massively different circumstances

The first was a somewhat rash "gotta have" buy for a 2006 S - my tin foil Citroen people carrier was a £10K deposit with the remainder £22k on a PCP with a £16K GFV

Run the clock forward to those dark days end of 2008 beginning of 2009 and I too got lucky

The £16K GFV motor was now worth but £12K and I offered LR that much for it - they refused so I handed it back (after a serious buffing to get rid of bramble rash) effectively escaping a £4K negative equity situation and then won again by picking up a 1 year old 2008MY SE for £21K - £5K less than it was on the official LR used list and a full £19K less than it sold for 12 months previous - and I did that on a 3 year PCP with only an £8K GFV - bought it outright at the end in 2012 and got three years of free motoring before WBAC'ing it for £2K more than the GFV three years previous Shocked

But this time I wanted to own one because I want to 'drill holes in it' so PCP was out, which meant a D4 was out, which is why I'm now a gypo Thumbs Up but a gypo paying only £300+ a month with a five year warranty on a bomb proof motor!

When I set my PCP up in September 2015, the largest deposit that they would take was 50% of the value of the car, including factory fit options.

However, under LR finance terms, once you've made the first installment there's nothing to stop you making lump sum payments to clear everything but the lump sump payment due at the end of the term. For every additional payment that you make your account is credited for all of the interest saved by that early payment, although they do keep the equivalent of 2 month's interest by way of their compensation.

I think that the current JLR PCP rate of 6.9% is on the high side, especially when you consider that the BoE base rate is just 0.25%

Has anyone purchased their Landie using a better rate PCP from a third party company?

Its not just about APR though, it depends on what amount is being repaid versus the total amount borrowed. I did a Lloyds Bank PCP quote, which from memory was about 4% APR, Land Rover had lower repayments.

It was 7.9% when I took mine out in September, but I was able to take LR up on their £3,000 subsidy by taking out PCP, which made it very cheap money! Is that subsidy still available to offset the 6.9%?

In my limited view, unless the car drops below the GFV the PCP is of no real benefit unless you get a manufacturer incentive above any discount you have already agreed. You can go to a bank, borrow the same money at a lower interest rate with no set up fees etc and extend the term so that at three years your loan balance is the same as the GFV. If you then part exchange or keep it, you are in the same place as the PCP. The only difference is there is no option to hand it back, you have to sell it to a dealer or privately. In 2008 you would have been better to hand it back as the GFV was more than it was worth, but not seen that since.

A few months ago I sold my Jaguar XF to a Jag dealer as a.cash sale for more that Land Rover would offer in part exchange.

It all depends on the deal they offer as a package in my view. Other benefit of a persoanl loan is there is no HPI register on the car so you can sell privately quicker as it takes a little while for the HPI register to update to clear finance.

That's a lot of money to borrow from the bank on an unsecured basis for many and even if your bank will agree, it leaves little headroom for future borrowing for unforeseen emergencies.

At least the PCP may be easier to get credit acceptance on (the PCP company having a lot of security by way of owning the car), while it can leave your borrowing capacity at the bank untouched and available for a rainy day.

I think the PCP works as long as you set the final payment low, the one on my present D4 is 13k so leaving plenty for a deposit even if I end up with dealer trade in price.
