Roofracks / New Prospeed roofrack
Sometime in mid-2022, Prospeed stopped taking orders for what is arguably the best roof rack for the Discovery 4 (and 3, of course).
I was quite disappointed, as I really wanted one for my car in Bahrain. I've held off purchasing a roof rack for this car as none are as good as Prospeeds previous offering. I did consider bringing the one on my UK car over - but shipping hassles put me off. I've been patiently waiting for the new Prospeed offering, and it appears it's now been released:https://prospeed.co.uk/collections/expedit...-roof-rack
I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. Presumably, with the D4 being out of production for 6+ years, it's no longer economically viable to manufacture what must be an increasingly low-volume item as the previous generation rack. The thing is, the new offering looks so generic that I'm considering just getting a Frontrunner Slimline 2, as at least that is tried and tested, and there are plenty of accessories available for it.
Thoughts? Which is the best (currently manufactured) rack for the D4 / D3?Chris

That does seem like an awful lot of cash for not a lot of metal.
I'd opt for a Terrafirma rack, with the optional front cowling and spotlights...

Well, that was a bit of a “damp squib”, I was on the list for the new ProSpeed rack.
So really glad I was able to pick up a good outgoing model.
At £1100 that’s a lot of money for a frame.
Would be much better investing on the LRP ultra slim Outrack.
A more substantial rack at a more competitive price ….. I know… I had one.

Thanks Ace. I wasn't aware of this one. It looks suspiciously like the previous Prospeed generation. Terrafirma is a bit hit or miss - so I'll try and find some reviews.

Indeed it was. Unless there's something I'm missing, it's a step backwards. In hindsight, I've wasted this season by waiting.
The LRP, Frontrunner and similar offerings seem a bit IKEA when compared to the original Prospeed. I can't help thinking of a shower curtain rail when I see them being put together. I've been chatting with a Frontrunner dealer in Dubai today - the discovery 3/4 rack is out of stock, and they are quoting me 10 to 12 weeks for delivery if I go that way.Chris

If I were in the market for a rack, I’d also buy the LRP slimline one. The dude designing and selling them seems to also dog food his products. That is a great vote of confidence in my opinion. Also, the other kit that he also sells is useful and fit for purpose. I’ve got a few.

Agreed that Max makes some nice stuff. He made up a custom switch mount panel for me a few years back and I have a few other small bits and pieces from him. Cost wise it comes out a bit cheaper that the frontrunner that I was quoted for today. I'll try and find some reviews.Chris

I have had the prospeed (first series) for more than 10 years and I can say that aesthetically it remains the most beautiful to look at and one of the quietest roof racks, on the other hand it is really heavy, it rusts easily and it is difficult to find the right anchor points due to the tubular section, it is also at least 20 cm narrower than the "ladder type" versions.
The LRP one, on the other hand, is really practical with infinite possibilities for attaching accessories (even non-LRP ones ) and is very robust and light ... certainly more practical and cheaper!- Easy-Lift suspension module 4.0

I suppose you need to look at your requirements for the rack. For me the Frontrunner slimline fits my requirements for Overlanding, as I have quite a few of their accessories. Have had it on the D3 for 7 years now, without any issues. The one accessory I like the most is the under fitting table, which is nice and quick to deploy when setting up camp.

These are critical points for me. This is my daily driver, and I will only be using the rack regularly for four months of the year. The way that the prospeed rack remains unnoticeable (from the driver's perspective) is the most attractive feature. Also, I was looking forward to the flooring panels behaving like an old-fashioned safari roof during the summer months

The accessories available for the Frontrunner are definitely a plus point. If I do end up going with the Frontrunner, I will definitely get the table. We currently use a little ARB slatted top aluminium table which is ok but takes time to set up and break down, and it takes up space in the car.
We're not set up for camping yet (the wife is keen on getting a roof tent at some point). But we are doing full days out in the desert in Saudi, so cooking lunch, sometimes dinner, then we evacuate ourselves to a hotel for a shower and sleep . The initial use for the rack will be to mount a toilet awning, a shade awning, to stow some bulky camp chairs and to get my maxtrax and shovel out of the boot.Chris

I have the FR rack and I'm very happy with it as I love the functionality and range of kit available. My other option was the PS but I don't think I'd swap now and definitely not for the new one.
I don't have any experience of the LRP rack, but I do have the rear tactical panels which a very sturdy, good quality well built bits of kit, I also have the Easylift but that's not really relevant. When dealing with LRP Massimiliano went above and beyond to help me. He is also a member on here and regularly contributes on the FB group, which I found reassuring. As above, if I was in the market for a different rack, I'd be happy to use LRP.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

I have a front runner rack on mine.
With the extra wind fairing and extended expedition rail kit, plus several accessories for it.
It’s a brilliant rack, and with the T slot rails, it will take anything with an M8 bolt.
I would say the Prospeed ladder is the best on the market though so I have that for the back.
The wind fairing makes a huge difference for noise etc. I could drive at 60 with sun roof fully open and have almost no air noise from it.

I had a 3/4 length Hannibal rack on my D3 and D4
. Brilliant. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control
Terrafirma is a poor copy of the PS with no lashing points other than the frame.
FR are a great rack, with a huge amount of accessories, this however negated by it’s 40kg weight leaving you a 35kg payload on a D3/4 (roof rated to 75kg).
Outrack - i know Max well, does other great products & is a cracking chap to boot.
Nakatenega make a modular system - Cargo Bear, 4x4Overlander retail here in UK.
Have been through OEM, 2 FR’s & on my 2nd Prospeed…….Paul.

12 Baltic Blue HSE - gone
15 Fuji HSE Lux
Club Biscuits, mmmm nice!

I was all set to go with Frontrunner - the table slung under the rack seems to be a killer feature. After talking to James at Prospeed today though, I think I will end up with the new Prospeed rack. There will be a wind fairing released - although he was cagey about when. It sounds like they are going to be developing plenty of accessories too.Chris
