The cooling system was altered at EU4, I wonder if the temp sensor being located in the top hose helps with the glow plugs not being used, and heating the engine more directly Question

I took it to nene overland in Peterborough, cried at the service desk for about 20 minutes and then told them to fix it at any costs.

Cost £2000, involved body and head removal. But was done in 3 days.

The only good thing being that the 105K/7y service was due at the same time and would have been £6-700, and it was included in the work.

Thumbs Up

It is begining to sound like an additional item is needed in each service of "Remove and refit glow-plugs" just to keep them moving freely.

Has anyone used D R Automotive in Stone?

Just come across their website and they say they specialise in glow plug removal.

Shame they're closed today. Would love to get a price!

I'm booked in at D R Automotive on Friday.

Dec, the owner, seemed like a good guy. Spent 15 mins explaining the heating, vibrating and hopefully not drilling process.

If all goes well, it's £240 all in.

If it goes down the Censored , it's £60 per hour to drill.

Can anyone give their experience of having this 'operation' on their motor?

A very nervous Danny

Do you need to replace all the glow plugs, by this I mean won't just 3 or 4 manage to get the car going on cold mornings? if so just replace any that come out easily and don't bother with the rest until you have a bit more time/dosh.

I asked if this was possible. Dec advised against leaving any snapped tips in as they could get sacked into the engine.

What about this, tool? Not sure if they can be hired rather than bought?

Heater plug removal

I have drilled a number out for our local dealer when they have snapped them..... But they took the heads off and I put them into our milling machine..... They are not difficult to drill out but you need to know what your doing, one head they had taken the thread out completely and broke the casting where the plug screws in, we managed to resurrect that head and get the broken bit out.... Why do they design something like this, although landrover aren't the only ones like this......

Just watched the video of that laser tool set... Can't help thinking ****-loads of swarf and god knows what else are going to end up dropping into the chamber, or does the lower portion of the glow-plug stop this?

Regardless, looks like an absolute Censored to get right and probably an easy route to an expensive fix! Not sure I'd ever be brave enough to take a drill bit to my cylinder heads.
 Cheers,

Gareth

On a side-note:

This year I have noticed that even in warm conditions, when I start the car, it will have a slight 'chuckle/cough' and then kick in.

Could this be injector related and can the guys who are doing my glow plugs check those aswell without it costing crazy money?

(Thanks for all the advice so far, folks)

Car is in the garage now.

First plug has snapped and he's attempting to remove it with the vibrating tool.

God, I'm so nervous about this bill....
