Great advice here and my 2010 D4 has started doing it, particularly since a service a few weeks ago. What I don’t understand is if the problem is a design fault it would presumably do it from day 1 but they don’t so what changes to make it happen? The oil level on mine is right at the top so I’ll be interested to see if it carries on when the level drops a bit.

I've now done the mod. Was easy peasy even lying on my back under the car on the driveway. Removing the starter motor was the hardest part, but even that not tricky once I'd worked out which pipes to unclip and get out of the way. I did it over two afternoons with just normal tools - 1/4 and 3/8 sockets sets, a few spanners, T30 torx bit - and best of all I had no bolts left over once everything was back together. First trip onto the bypass, HUGE plume of smoke - presumably just burning off what was left in the turbo and intercooler hoses. After that, nothing. What a relief.

You will have to take the engine undershield off to see the turbo drain pipe. No way to see it from the engine compartment unfortunately.D1 300Tdi - gone

Did the secondary turbo oil drain mod today on MY12 D4.
Hardest part is getting the starter motor out. Rest was easy enough. Had a few drips of oil from the lowest old pipe connection but nothing a tissue or two couldn't handle.
I took a few photos to try and help if anyone was struggling to identify bits.
Starter motor. Bolts to remove are to the left. Black and red cable also need removing and black bracket needs removing/loosening to aid removal.
Two starter bolts removed. Upper one has a weird threaded bit that holds a clip on. Clip is a bit awkward to remove but comes off with a bit of effort.
Black bracket that needs to be loosend on the starter motor and the bolt removed that holds it onto the engine.
Cables to be removed off the starter motor to be able to remove it.
Once the starter is out the way, you'll be able to see the blanked plug you need to remove for the new pipe. Just above my latex gloved finger on the left is a stud that has a nut attached to it, holding the old oil pipe on. That needs to come off to be able to remove the old pipe. The nut can be discarded according to the land rover bulletin.
Took me 2.5 hours with a tea stop or two. Did it on the drive with the front jacked up and on axle stands.
Hope it helps.

No. I didn't and didn't spill any. Had a little drip but that was probably from the pipe itself that I was removing.
I'm sure others will be along to confirm.

Thanks for that.
I was mid job and as soon as I undid the sump drain on the pipe I got a good amount. I’d hazard a guess at a pipes worth if I’m honest.
Would this mean I have turbo issues?D4 3.0 SDV6 Indus Silver

Hi jamez79 and others
I appreciate very much when found this post.
Today I followed your advices to fix the problem of turbo drain pipe on my LR4 2011 model.
I completed removing 5 bolts from starter. The black or negative cable is easy to be removed. However, I cannot remove the red cable due to the narrow access. The document said reposition the starter to remove all cables but it did not say much how.
If you still remember how you did this step before, could you please advise me? Should I remove the black part on the starter motor? Some people said it is solenoid valve. There is only a 10mm sized nut to hold that part but I am afraid that I may damage that part as no one talk about it.
It's over a year since I changed mine, but I did isolate the battery and move the starter motor, but not completely as I couldn't work out how to feed it out the space available. I believe I moved it towards the front of the car to improve access to the pipe.
If you are worried about seized bolts give them a good soaking with WD40, PlusGas or similar. If the bolts go tight when loosening consider a half turn in the opposite direction, as that can often clear the threads enough.
All the bolts for the old drain pipe came off OK on my 2010 D4, so hopefully being that bit newer you will be OK.
Regards,
Steve

Thanks Steve
I did try pushing the starter to the front car but it does not move much. I even try to push 13 mil socket to the nut holding the red cable but I am still not able to turn it. I think the two drain pipes have to be more flexible to make room for manipulating the starter.
All bolts of the starter were removed. So if the red cable is still there then I cannot take the starter out.
Please help.
Thanks.
