Droning noise on my D3 turned out to be the rear diff. I was thinking it was the tyres but changing didn't cure it. 8 months later, drone came back and it was the Front diff ! 155K miles. I had all the oils changed when I purchased the car at 100K miles

Definitely the front where the noise is coming from. Continuous tone that just gets a bit louder from 30mph upwards, constant even when coasting at tickover on a 'decent' tarmac at varying speeds.
ive no idea how long the tyres have been on, and the fact that they are mismatched doesn't help my paranoia. Also I suspect the car was stood for a few months between last owner selling and me purchasing. 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

so it was definitely tyres causing the noise.
the tyre set up from when I bought the car was
FL - Landsail budget FR - Pirelli Scorpion Zero
RL - Pirelli Scorpion Zero RR - Landsail budget
all were wearing evenly currently around 5.5mm
Ive now swapped my offside tyres front to back so the axles have the same brands of tyres on and the noise has all but gone. There was some slight stepping on the tread blocks of the Pirelli so that was obviously the cause of some of the noise.
ive also checked the normal height measurement from centre hub to wheel arch at 47cm on all 4 corners.
when funds allow ill be swapping all 4 tyres probably for Scorpion Zero 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
