Working around tired glow plugs, useful findings
After some measurements I think we are down to 2-3 working glowplugs. We had found that running the cycle 3-4 times made a useful difference on frosty mornings.
Last weekend when we had the cold spell for a few days after not being used for for 18hrs D3 wouldn't start (-5).
The forecast didn't look like it was going to get warm all day so I got my propane space heater set up about 6ft away from the front and left it running(making sure it wasn't too close to damage anything) after about 25mins it started first turn of the key Now I know this is not practical for most owners but worked something out that could help some others
The forecast was cold overnight for 4-5 days so I made sure the battery was fully charged and I ran the engine up to temperature mid evening(obviously assuming it had been running previously during the day). I would then fire it up before I went to bed for a few minutes. It was below zero every one of the following mornings as low as -6 and it started every time and didn't even run lumpy. For reference most of those days the difference between last running and starting in the morning was no more than 7hrs
Clearly there was enough residual heat there to make a difference, it may sound like a pain and may not be possible if you have park to on street but it's certainly far less of pain than a D3 that won't start.
Obviously don't do any of this if you have to park on the road and have had a drink.IID PRO

The winter of 2010 I had a tractor that would struggle to start as it was about -10c every night. so I'd park it in a shed over night with an old hairdryer pointed to the injection pump and diesel filters and a blow heater under the engine. They were both on a timer and it was timed that they would run for about 20 min before I'd need the tractor. Started first turn every morning.

When we had a Shogun with old IDI engine, the glowplug relay would be temperamental, so i would pour 4 or 5 bottles of hot tap water over the cylinder head which would bring the block temperature up enough for starting. Even my wife got the hang of it

I used 2kW air heater just below the engine for an hour at minus 10. Got me going with just 1 glowplug working. Now changed all 6 and low temperature is not an issue.
