Nothing happens if I move the wires about near the connection but give it a sharp tap on the cluster and some of the lights go out like the right indicator light but the left one stays on tap it again and they all flash again.

Sounds like you need a new Ipac or a refurbished one.
If you can... undo the Ipac and check if the part number is YAC502090, its a sticker on the top if the Ipac on the black plastic housing.. I have this ipac here from a car with the same issues as you do.
To me it looks like an issue with the 120ohms resistor soldering points or the canbus tranciever. Im not sure if its the Highspeed or the medium speed bus the issue origin from yet.

Sent the cluster of to cluster repair uk they charge £15 +pp to test they leave it on test for 3 days to see if it's faulty.
They now only do a full rebuild on the discovery 3 cluster without losing any data which cost £129 with 2 year warranty.
Will post what happen when I get it back.

Phone them today said it has a serious problem so they are doing a full rebuild and should be ready tomorrow.
