According to the compiler of the Oxford Dictionary some ambiguities are both actually correct such as between "z" and "s" or "c" and "s"

Color is specifically American English but usurped the use cof colour in around 1850. Colour is defined as the British English version and obviously has the benefit of the history behind it where English is used throughout the world.

Ettiquet requires that the version used should be aimed at the the intended audience not the writer. So a "British" book published in America should use "color"

Isn’t it the case that American English is recognised and accepted as a separate language to British English nowadays?

Reading another, as usual, brilliant Bill Bryson book; “Made in America” which goes a long way to explaining the changes in ‘English’ along the way, many ‘Americanisms’ are originally ‘original English’ and then local variants, etc. Educational as ever Thumbs Up

Color is in fact a perfect example. It is the original old English spelling which gradually changed, including in the American colonies. America even kept the English spelling for 70 years or so after independence although there is no real explanation as to why they eventually reverted back to the old version.

The more significant switch to more general use of phonetic (AKA lazy Wink ) spelling happened much later

Kids coming back from Uni for a short break and pilfering the cupboards from toilet roll to croutons.

Can you tell I was barely able to muster enough coffee for my morning fix! Three tins grew legs and walked out of the cupboard leaving me with a used tin that had a spoonful left. Wouldn't mind so much if they asked or were hard up. Rolling Eyes

And yet the internet is full of the US spellings even though it is viewed by many more people that use English outside of the US. Or perhaps "international English" is now the default and uses US spellings?

ISTR that many of the current spellings were formalised by Noah Webster when he wrote his work on the English language. He used the now-common US spellings rather than the English spellings of the time - probably because he was an American nationalist.

Rolling with laughter Yes, Croutons, Ceaser Salad sauce etc. Good advice, but the problem is SWMBO, how dare I think of sanctioning the kids and if I put my foot down, I will doubtless suffer. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, that’s the least of my problems and only ourselves to blame I suppose. We did buy a house for the eldest to live in with the GF whilst at Uni. The theory was as we paid his accommodation for his first degree, we’d save ourselves a bit on money on the next degree rather than renting. Make a few quid when we sold it at the end of the course, it might make up for the 6% additional home tax you get hit for in Scotland.

The hope was he’d do a bit of decorating and gardening, but apparently he’s far too busy and now she’s finished her Masters, she’s working, so she’s too busy too. I even bought him a petrol lawnmower, but he told me he’d like a gardener! I told him that’s fine, but I ain’t paying. Shocked

You wait until he talks to SWMBO. You'll be paying Monty Don to mow the grass before you know it! Rolling with laughter
