Can do it all on line and pay the £85, DVLA then send you the Retention Certificate.
Make sure you have the new plates to hand as when you get to the end of the online process it tells you to display the new number on the vehicle.

As long as there hasn't been a gap in the road tax within the last 5 years it's 5mins online, if there has you have to send form v317 I think it is and the v5 to Swansea,
Just done mine and there was a gap 3 years ago when it went to a trader so had to send it all off still only took a week to get it all back though

Hardware is right...has to be done during office hours up to 7pm .... and the transfer is almost instantaneous...
The only frustrating part now is if the plate is going to be transferred subsequently onto a second hand car you have to complete the sale of the vehicle and you can only transfer your cherished plate onto this new vehicle only once you have received the new logbook in your name... which can be a number of weeks!

I bought the D4 just over 4 years ago from a Landrover dealer so there probably was a gap then.
