'Tyre' type noise when driving

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this?

2012 D4 HSE with 69,000 miles.

When driving there is quite a lot of what I can best describe as tyre noise - a 'humming' noise that varies with speed. It is more of an irritating noise than an alarming noise and is worse at when driving at around 50 mph and worse when cruising or slowing down rather than accelerating.

Other people have described it as a bit like a wheel bearing on its way out.

My usual tyres are 19" Goodyear Duratrac which have a pretty aggressive tread and I have been blaming these for the noise but my father also has a Discovery with the same tyres (albeit less worn) and this doesn't make the same noise.

It has been to the dealer who blamed the tyres.

It is out of warranty in a couple of weeks so I was keen to see if it was the tyres so today I swapped the wheels are tyres for a brand new set of 20" rims with standard Pirelli Scorpion tyres that came off my fathers car when they had done less than 500 miles... and the noise it still there.

I know the solution is to get it back to the dealer with these wheels on but I wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar and what the solution might be?

Apologies for the rambling post but it is driving me round the bend Confused

I have something similar. I too blamed tyres (Grabber AT's) but despite these getting well worn, the noise has not changed. In mine, it seems to come from the steering column area. I have stripped down the dash in this area but haven't been able to make it worse, or better. It seems to be worse between 50-60 mph, then fades and rarely occurs at 70. Then occasionally on slowing down it will sound again for a few seconds. The car has had numerous "health checks" and 2 MOT's (strict NI ones) and no wheel bearing failure has been indicated. I would like to get hold of 4 road tyres to totally rule out the grabbers but haven't been able to yet. I put the spare (full size Pirelli) on the front right to see if that changed anything but it was exactly the same. I have removed external A pillar trims and taped up across the windscreen top and bottom but no difference.

Like you, its driving me round the bend.

Not sure if this helps but on my D3 the tyres (cant remember make) castledlated (blocks wore in a way to create a ridge) when worn - made a noise like a Chinook - changed tyres, noise vanished.

Dealer told me about this when I complained abot the noise - I thought he was taking the micky

I appreciate I put the word tyres in the title which is why this thread was moved here.

But to re-iterate I have changed the wheels and tyres and the noise hasn't changed, so it isn't a wheel/tyre issue.

Any chance it could be moved back to the D4 section as I don't think this is the right section for it?

Thanks.

Just an update on this, it has gone back to dealer with the alternative set of wheels/tyres on it and they have accepted the off-side front wheel bearing needs changing, so it is booked in to have this done.

Moved it back for you.

Interesting post this, as my 2013 has a droning noise at anything over 50, and yes I am feeling mostly through the steering. I have not yet checked the wheel bearings, but it looks like one could be shot.

53k miles.

I assume to check bearings its the same as other cars, jack up and try to rock the wheel between 12-6 and 3-9 o clock? Should there be zero movement or is some ok?

I drove on

Vredestien M&S tyres on Volvos for many years...
Good tyre to improve the winter / bad weather grip....high milage tyre
Over 30k miles....they got noisy...
If you run your hands around the tyre each way you can feel the tread blocks "canting" over...
this is what made these noisy....I usually renewed at 30k.

Wheels bearings failing on these cars does not always equate to play. Mine were failing and made a 'tyres rumbling/howling' noise but had no play whatsoever when jacked up.

I had this on a Passat. Rear tyres as above, though plenty of tread left.

I just had wheel bearings replace on the front axle.
The noise from the left side was horrible.
The right side I could hear very faint only when the left side was replaced.
There was next to no play at all on the right side.

Hello

Sorry to hijack your thread.

I'm May this year I put a set of Maxxis AT771 tyres on my D3. Prior to that I had replaced the offside wheel bearing.

I now have a rumbling noise which I had attributed to the tyres being harder and more of a chunky pattern than the previous Wranglers. Recently I had been wondering if it could actually be the nearside wheel bearing which is a few years old.

Just to update, took the car to a local indy and he has heard the noise. He described it as a buzz, which is a good description, he likened it to a relay buzz. Put the car on the ramp and the offside front wheel bearing is definitely noisy though no play. Its booked in to have that changed. He isn't sure that its the cause of the noise in the cabin but reckons it cant be helping. One step at a time!

I'm watching this thread with interest, because I have been aware of similar noise to the OP....it was amplified by the Grabbers I had,but it is now more obvious even with the Scorpions fitted....I have also noticed it slightly increases in volume going round a roundabout....
