Brake disc screw
Hi
I've changed brakes on many cars and the disc always has a screw. I've just taken the front wheels off and there aren't any screws on the front discs, not checked back yet.
Am I being stupid here, does a D3 not need them? I would like to fit them so a part number would be useful, but tbh ill just be calling tge local indie in the morning g either way.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

Yes it should be there, but not a disaster if it's not. It just keeps the disc in place when the wheel is off, and will have no effect on braking or safety.

I do put the screws back (don't do them up very tight like some previous owners do!) but it's not like the disc coming off is going to be the biggest of your problems if you get to that stage when driving along.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Thanks guys.
I will put them back for the sake of it. If that screw was all that held the disc on, then I think it'd have to be a 'touch bigger. I just wondered if it helped stop squeeking etc. Either way I'll put some in.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

As above comments BUT, if you do put it back loose, if the screw head is higher than the disk face it could, if it sits against the wheel face, cause the wheel to be out of true or even come loose causing vibration and dangerous handling.
That said, the dirt pattern suggests that it may be located in a recess in the wheel face?Series 1 V8

Not changed discs on the Disco but on every other car I've done it on, the screw is seemingly only of use during assembly as the disc needs deft use of a mallet to get it off after it's been on a while..

The screw also keeps the disc in place when you have the wheels off for service etc. If they move , debris can fall between the disc and hub and when the wheel bolted up again you can get disc run out and DTV develop, with the issues that generates. The replacement discs I have had from Advanced factors include new retaining screws.

I had to drill one out a few weeks ago. It was that tight the Torx bit was twisting and slipping out.
I have fitted discs without them before with no ill effects. I'm sure I've had cars that never had screws holding discs on, nor a place for the screw to go.
