Finally, can anyone who has used 5w40, say whether it has had any contraindications?

A oil with a higher HTHS offers more protection as it provides a higher film thickness, this can only ever be a benefit.
I would never use a C1, C2, C5, B5 spec oil as these can have a HTHS as low as 2.9 pick a C3, C4 or B3, B4 oil if you want to run a 5w30 grade oil.
A 5w40 grade guarantees me a 3.6 minimum HTHS and the VW505.00 specification is ideal for any non DPF car and VW511.00 ideal for any car with a DPF.
The shell Helix ultra I have mentioned and use in my own Disco 4 has some of the most demanding manufacturer specifications.

also on 5w40 C3 motorseems to be quieter and i noticed much faster oil pressure than on 30
also not even a tiniest bit of "silver engine dust" in filter over laast two changes so she will go on forever lol
