Jacking height
Does anyone know how high a jack needs to be able to lift the disco for wheel changing. After skinning my knuckles nicely with landrovers finest Im thinking of investing in something better. I know an air jack makes sense, but way out of my budget Im afraid.www.Bitter-sweet.co.uk
If you're using a trolley jack on the outer part of the wishbones, about 2 inches should do it
If you use the jacking points, a lot higher!I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

It strikes me that you're more likely to do damage jacking half your car several feet in the air than you are raising one wishbone by a couple of inches. Obvioulsy you need take care no matter how you jack your car, but the wishbone method seems to limit the potential for disaster. You can't jack at the wishbones with a scissor jack, which may explain LR advising against jacking anywhere other than the dedicated points (which have holes to accurately locate the scissor jack head).I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. I must admit that my local tyre place uses the method described on the other thread.
They had a D3 slide off their trolly jack and puncture the compressor
The rear passenger side jacking point on the chassis is very close to the compressor and is only really accessible using the LR supplied jack.
Machine Mart £65ish 3 ton garage trolley Jack, wide therefore stable, lifts from 120 to 520.
there ref CTJ3000G. but heavy at 30kg

You need at least 500mm lift from a trolley jack if using the chassis jacking points - beware that Clarkes one though as it will twist if you are not extremely careful - I now have a bigger CostCo oneSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

second that Steve. I've the clarkes one from machine mart, 3ton, hilift, and it twists badly, and sinks slowly - not impressed really, but cheap (£40), so you gets what you pay for.

Just out of interest, what is the maximum inflated height of a Takla air jack? anyone?www.Bitter-sweet.co.uk
There are two Clarke 3T trolley jacks one is ISTR around £40 and made of cheese, the other one is made of lead and is a right professional looking thing and is available in two versions standard and quick-lift. Both around £70-£80.
Mine is the non quick lift one and bloody good "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

After poor results with the Clark trolley jack I went for a 4T bottle jack from Halfords, lifts really easily under the wishbones. There are some dimples in the wishbone which allow the bottle jack to locate nicely and not slip. No idea if this is likely to damage it but can't see how and it works very well.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
