To be honest, just save your money and cross your fingers! Don't touch anything that does not cover wear and tear.

In the interest of disclosure: I have not yet tried to use it...
But I have a Warranty direct "lite" policy on my two cars (D3 and 330i cab)
The idea is that you get the same cover level as the "normal" WD policy BUT you can only make a claim if the car breaks down (at home or on the road or in Europe) and it CANNOT be fixed at the road side. There is also a 5 claim per year limit.
My reading of this is that if the car breaks down and I can still drive it, its my £££ to fix. If it is terminal (Suspension compressor = don't drive, turbo = dont drive, gearbox = don't drive, EGR collaps and no power = don't drive etc etc), they fix it (subject to the normal WD hoops: Service history check, get approval for everything first etc).
On my 330i I paid a small (£45 iirc) surcharge to remove the betterment clause too (its 2003 and has 70K on it).
Overall cost was c. £180 for 2 years cover.
