Hmm, well it was worth a try.
There are indeed two fuses for the instrument pack but if they are not the cause, I'm out of ideas.

BTW I found the fuse numbers here. The whole handbook is online there.

I am going to go get a few more 5 amp fuses and replace both again just to be certian. I have replaced fuses before with what looked good but were bad.

Same here...

Well, given the fact that this thread is 1+ years old... did you have any success with solving this stupid behavior?

Mine does the same as you guys described... starting the engine, turning on headlights -> headlights are ok, but dash and Radio are not illuminated.
Happens when it is cold (below 0° C).

Funnily enough mine did this a few weeks ago before I put her in storage. It was bloody cold and the car was frozen so could all be linked Thumbs Up

It's definitely the dimmer. Changing the dimmer setting illuminates the instruments...
Don't know if changing the dimmer would solve the problem.

instrument panel lights

A bit of a long post sorry. I know this is an old thread but thought it was worth resurrecting. I bought my D3 a couple of months ago but only drove it in the dark last week only to discover the instrument panel lights were not working.

The first thing I did was to check the fuses which were fine. This left me to suspect the dimmer switch/rheostat. on turning the dimmer switch I cant feel any resistance which I thought I should.

I then pulled out the switch panel & opened it up hoping to find a rheostat that I could open up & check the contacts. However the rheostat is a tiny sealed unit less than 1cm square.

The rheostat has three connections two at one end & one at the other end. on testing with my multi meter I got a circuit from the single connection to the one closest to the edge of the psb. The third one didn't give me a signal.

Next I soldered a wire to the two connections which had given me a circuit put it back in the D3 and got dash lights so I was happy.

A day or so later I tried it again & it didn't work but after a few minutes of fiddling with the light switch & the dimmer switch they came on.

This has happened a few times now. It's good that they come on but a bit of a pain.

My current thinking is to loop in the third connection however I don't understand why it has a third connection & if it will be OK to bring it into the loop.

Anybody got any idea about that?

Cheers....

No don’t. I think the other connection is ground

I know someone else removed the dimmer module assembly. And connected 2 connections together.

instrument panel lights

Hello again

I've just done a bit of googling & found that the dimmer must be a potentiometer & not a rheostat as I thought. I've since been trying to find out how to bypass the pot but no luck so far.

Once again any advise gratefully accepted. Thumbs Up

Instrument / Dash lights not working.

I'm back to this one. I previously looped out the dimmer switch and my dash lights would work sometimes but not always.

So I recently bought a new headlight switch expecting it to solve the problem, but it hasn't.

When I turn the lights on either manually or on Auto the dash lights flash briefly then will not come back on.

I didn't need to as the lights flash but I've once again checked the fuses which are OK.

I've done a scan with the GAP iidtool and get no error messages, I've also gone through the config files with the GAP Tool but can't find anything relating to the dash lights.

I'm at a loss what to do next. I'm currently using a mini USB LED strip light so I can see the speedo but it's not great.

Cheers

A Gap tool is no use to you with this one.

I recommend you fit the old bypassed switch so there is no risk of damaging the new one.

I’ll have a think.
