D3 coolant problem

D3 coolant problem

Hi

D3 looses coolant somehow after a drive the engine fan is noticeably blowing

suddenly steam comes out of the middle of the engine, near the oil filter in the middle.

NO coolant left in the expansion tank, when opening the expansion tank, it fills itself up, and steam blowing weakens

Seems strange, before the steam, the temperature indicator goes up and down

it is like the steam comes out of the Y piece, when looking at the engine it comes from the right side.

Probably an internal leak somewhere, but what.... EGR cooler? internal loss in the engine?

NO typical white residue in expansion tank/dipstick
No smell in the exhaust
No loss of power

Any known failures you might think of?

Cracked water housing. It is in the 'V' of the engine. They are made of plastic and the heat makes them brittle. Quite cheap to fix though.

and this gives steam like a water boiler? Razz

Just topped up with water, and in the middle at the Y i hear water escape Neutral

Yup I would say that is your problem symptoms will vary depending on severity of the crack. When hot will open up crack. There are few connections around there that can crack/break leak.
Mine failed and overheated pretty quickly.

A common problem here in Africa , have personally seen 2 x engines that seized because of this and seen a few with cracks in..
It needs to be replaced at 50 000km as a preventative measure , very easy to do just need a Torx set , anda 8mm and 10mm sockets and pliers.

Its called a WATER OUTLET ASSEMBLY PART NO# 1357091,


ITS A VERY VERY IMPORTANT PART FOR PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, SAME AS A CAM BELT SERVICE..
Do it is cheap and can save you thousands
