Whether you’re replacing the arms or just the bushes you may want to consider the uprated RRS bushes.

S-in-L took his D4 to main agent for a “free” MOT, health check and 7 year service, got a £4,600 bill waiting for him when he went to collect it and they would not release it until it was paid, needed new front bushes and disks, neither would they realise it after it’s MOT until the work was done as they claimed it was illegal.

Illegal or not surely holding someone elses car is the only illegal bit?

Did I read it right and you said they mot tested it then said it needed the work doing?

Surely he had to Ok the work before they did it ? Not sure they can decide to do £4.5k worth of work without permission. Also knowing what the health check came back with on mine (8 years) ago. 90% of the health check was hopeful at best. Pads needed replacing (they had half left) etc etc. They gave it a red (dangerous) as it needed a 4 wheel alignment. This was only if they changed an arm (which it didn’t need anyway). Am sure they do this to trick people into thinking it all needs doing etc.

Yes, failed it’s MOT and they claimed it is now illegal to drive a car on public roads with a failed MOT.

Mr Kington: yes they did tell him before the work was done, but as he has a monthly account with them they would not allow him to put it on the monthly account, they claimed £4K is the limit and as it had gone over this limit had to be paid in full, not just the amount it had gone over, they did not inform of of this prior to the work being done.
All I am comparing is how much can be saved with DIY.

DIY would save a fortune. My D3 is well out of warranty hence doesn’t matter as much but I get everything from Advanced factors and a local mechanic does all the work. Saves a small fortune. If the D4 is new or within warranty then maybe not so easy to go down this route.

Regarding the garage then they will hold every single customer to ransom if their call fails the MOT. Doesn’t seem right or legal.

No garage can impound your car for failing an mot, they can say it’s not legal to drive and report you to the police if you do drive it. They cannot stop you trailering the vehicle away for repair elsewhere.

My D3 failed its MOT this year! This was 7 days before the old MOT ran out. It was failed by VOSA inspectors who did a spot check on the MOT station involved. Just my luck. Was informed you still have a valid MOT until the old one expires. Drove the car and got it fixed. It passed one day after the old one expired as I had 10 working days in which to present the car for retest. The retest did not cost anything. Suggest the garage was at it playing on the owners lack of knowledge!

See this all the time

The vehicle "shouldn't" be driven away with a Dangerous failure on the MOT cert. But the car "shouldn't" be driven on the road in an unroadworthy condition anyway Thumbs Up

Major defects, can be driven away for repair elsewhere, without issue

If you are paying someone else's labour to replace the bushes, then it can work out more expensive than putting a new arm on

D3 front upper arms are a perfect example

Complete genuine arm, with 2 new bushes and new ball joint - £63.44 + VAT
Genuine bushes* are £40 + VAT each Laughing
The ball joint being another £35 + VAT
And then the additional labour to replace bushes and joint

*Cheaper bushes are available. This is just an argument I had with LR Approved warranty. They wouldn't cover replacing the arms, only the bushes Laughing

Yep - those prices wouldnt make sense to buy seperately even if changing the bushes myself! Lower arms are more cost effective though.

So, I need to buy bushes. Does anyone have any opinions on brands? I have seen Delphi, Meyle, Lemforder and Genuine. Lemforder are really cheap....

Does anyone have any more detail on the RRS 'upgrade'?

Does anyone know the size of bush removal tool I need for changing the 2 bushes on the front lower arms?

I have a spare set of arms with shot bushes but the bush removal sizes I have for the press aren't the right size to remove either bush, anyone know what size is needed and where I can buy the 2 of them?

Thanks

Hiya

The first link gives u the part numbers

https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/front-lo...-139-c.asp

Then if u put the part numbers in the link below gives u the sizes of the bushes

https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/439...very_3___4

Also wonder if u order the bushes first then measure them when they arrive to double check

Hope that may help
