As much as I'm keen to do this mod the clock spring price means it may have to wait a while , looks like anyone with an 09MY may already have the right one though The End

Yes i agree the clock spring is about the same price as the wheel its self if not a tad more.
The MY09> D3 D4 & RRS even if not fitted with the heated wheel should already have the 2 pin plug and wireing in in the lower steering cowl but it may still need the clock spring upgrade.
I think 99% of the pre MY09's will also need a 12V 10A feed and a GND adding as the wireing wont be there already to use as on the MY09> cars.
The GND can come from the lower kick panal to the right of your right foot where the gnd points are and 12V feed for numerious places locally.

Do I understand this right, for us older D3's the heated sheel clock spring will not be enough, we will still have to find a power feed?

take a 10a feed from the battery and got thruogh the grommit in the bulkhead, and the gnd can come from the gnd post behind the kick panal.

Negative should be the bottom pin when clockspring is fitted to the car. If you have a voltage tester you could always make a continuity test through it. The pins on the steering wheel side are the same on the column side so you could also look at the wheel plug to work it out.
If you still struggling i suppose i could go and look

There are pin numbers on the wheel connector. 1-brown, 2-red cable. One would say the red is positive. But is it?D3 LE James Cook, 2,7 TDV6 auto

No, it does not work. The heating lever lights orange for a second and goes out again. No heat at all. Any ideas? Could that be because of the wrong polarity?D3 LE James Cook, 2,7 TDV6 auto
