Nothing on here though.

My point is no point crying over the move of one model, when other manufacturers have abandoned the UK altogether.

If home production has stagnated, and overseas production continues to increase, that is real terms decline... the same as having inflation without a pay rise is a real terms pay cut!

If we end up with import tariffs post-Brexit, is the D5 about to get even more expensive?

Not necessarily, if the manufacturer takes a hit on their sales margin per vehicle. This used to be relatively common to countries that have a high taxation (= car tax).

Errr... they did. As any Transit driver will tell you, the Turkish ones are nowhere near as well built as they used to be from Southampton!

And the ones built in Southampton were shyte.

JLR has been building cars abroad for a while. The E-Pace is built in Austria.

Just read it in the telegraph (not a good article, going way off topic about design of the previous models better blah blah) must admit I had it in my head this was already happening. I would imagine JLR is being run on a knife edge and if it stacks up then it needs to be done else the inevitable will happen. Always a shame to see investment not go to the UK but rather this than a JLR decline.

I had already stated that the plants elsewhere in the world made sense (BRA, CHN, IND), and from my perspective of wanting to see UK manufacturing thrive they help, as a fair amount of the parts needed for these plants would be made in these shores. These are parts that wouldn't have been made if JLR had exported complete cars as the tariffs applied in the local markets would have severely reduced sales........

Where this situation is different is that for the first time you are moving production from the UK to a neighbouring country within the same market to service the UK. There are those on this board who have no qualms about where the product is made so long as it is the right product for them, which is an entirely legitimate position. But there are also those like myself who like the fact that our hard-earned pennies stay within the UK and help contribute to high skill, high paid manufacturing jobs. I would also argue that the 30+ years of manufacturing the Disco in Brum makes it one of the icons of UK manufacturing, so only time will tell how much this impacts sales and brand loyalty. In summary for me a complete kick in the gonads for my 15 years' loyalty.......

FT said that RR/RRS will continue in UK as will RR Evoque (second highest selling) and Disco Sport (highest selling). New RR/RRS will be manufactured at Solihull 2020 onwards. Their take was that JLR is committed to UK as they intend to develop EVs there.

Slovakia plant will indeed take over Discovery which FT noted is one of the least selling ones Whistle and the future new Defender.

JLR to shed more jobs as it shifts Discovery production out of UK, https://www.ft.com/content/79502168-6d82-11e8-92d3-6c13e5c92914

Meanwhile Tesla to cut 9% of jobs in major restructuring, https://www.ft.com/content/85f61f5a-6e6b-11e8-92d3-6c13e5c92914

Both URLs are either paywalled or require registration. Apologies in advance.

Presumably the mythical "All New Defender" will share much of the D5's underpinnings as they're all now based on the ally Range Rover platform. I think the D5 uses steel suspension components whereas the FFRR/RRS use aluminium - I would guess that the Defender will use steel. So it would all make sense to have them in the same factory.

The D4 was least selling model apart from Defender in 2015 and 2016. Whistle

Apologies in advance. Thumbs Up
