Gary Barlow and Tax Avoidance.

The fella appears to owe a lot of tax -fair enough.
He is a singer (although the jury is out on that one) not, presumably, a tax expert.
Doubtless, he will have paid a small fortune for tax advice from professionals, which has been found to be rubbish.
Seems to me he is a victim - why aren't the TV powers that be, tackling the source of the problem instead of going for the 'lazy' win?
No doubt he will pay the money and move on, but how many more people are being conned with these dodgy schemes??

Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

The four of them put £66 million into it ....they are not old age pensioners being swindled for a few grand on the doorstep FFS

Quote:
Judge Colin Bishop told the court that “Icebreaker is, and was known and understood by all concerned to be, a tax avoidance scheme.”

“The aim was to secure [tax] relief for members, and to inflate the scale of the relief by unnecessary borrowing,” he explained. “No serious or even moderately sophisticated investor, genuinely seeking a profit... would rationally have chosen an Icebreaker partnership.”

Correct -all very wealthy people, who are more than able to pay their taxes.
My point is they will have taken professional advice which has been complete rubbish.
Go after the people who have set up and sold these schemes.

The only reason he put the money in that scheme was to avoid paying tax. Cameron should not support him. It's the second time he has come to his defence

Yes, I agree, he's avoiding Tax. Too easy to blame others. They are acting on his instructions. It's his responsibility.

PS take away his OBE. It's not like he paid something towards it, is it, more like the rest of us suckers did. Besides which what was his non tax re numeration for the Olympics? Whistle

He's been rumbled fair and square, he should pay what he owes plus interest and fined. However, I don't see the need for him to hand his OBE back.

The guy has been shown as a cheat. I personally thourght your character should be beyond reproach if your in receipt of an award. If not, it cheapens it for all the other people who deserved it and kept their noses clean. Whistle

He has raised millions for charity. For that alone he deserves the OBE.

Everyone..... Everyone tries to get away with the least amount of tax they can legally get away with. Just because you are rich and have spare income most of us can only dream of, this doesn't change.

This was legal, maybe morally wrong, but legal..

Blame the idiots who write the rules and allow these loopholes to be taken advantage of.

I agree, if he had done anything illegal he should be punished accordingly, but he hasn't.

How many more millions are lurking in these schemes?
Lets see if any of the establishment are linked -or will it be quietly brushed over! Whistle

Probably a similar type of scheme that the well known used car salesman Chris Moyles was involved in Whistle Laughing

Charity that wouldn't be required if everyone who was due to pay an amount of tax actually paid it rather than paying someone to find a way to avoid paying the tax they owe.

But if everybody paid their taxes, how can we be sure they won't waste it, they waste a good amount as it is.
