Gearbox Flush - new filter as well or not?

Hi All. Looking at getting a gearbox flush on my MY13 - 78000 miles. Nothing really wrong with the box - bit clunky when cold but pretty smooth when warmed up. More of a nice to have than a must have.

I’ve been quoted £395 plus VAT for a flush and refill or £695 + VAT for a flush, filter change and refill. Quite a difference between the two.

Is a filter change necessary in your humble (and expert) opinions?

Also going for an Alive remap to spice things up a bit Very Happy

Who quoted you?
Is that for a normal drop and fill or a Megaflush using a pumped machine?

That sounds expensive, presumably it's a megaflush and includes a new sump?

Don't forget to tell your insurers about the Alive remap; expect the premium to increase somewhat.

It was Gumtree 4x4 in West Sussex. They do the Alive remap so was going to get both done at the same time. I’ll check out Martin Hind. Cheers.

I thought it was a bit expensive. I’ve asked the above question.

I’ve heard that some insurers don’t ramp up the premium for the remap but I’m not holding my breath.

Seems steep

We charge £300 + VAT for an 8 speed flush, for reference...

Dartford have quoted £280 inc VAT for flush only or £525 inc VAT for flush / filter.

Would you guys recommend a filter change as well?

I’d megaflush only but’s that’s my personal opinion. I’ve got a 15 year old D3 with 260k km on, flushed at 192k, with original pan & filter.

IF you’re changing the pan and filter, do change the mechatronic sleeve as well at the same time. http://new.lrcat.com/#!/12128/41216/44190/3459/44295 (it’s the biggest in that kit). It can’t be removed unless the pan is down while the cost is not material.

Asked my regular indie if they would do a flush as it’s going in soon for some work on the injectors. They said as a general rule they don’t carry out oil changes on gearboxes because....

“....there is only a 50% chance of making the issue better. In some instances the torque converter (no one has an answer as to why!) rejects the new oil and ends up juddering further. Any customer who wants us to carry out the above repair has to sign a disclaimer before we carry out the works”

Has anybody had experience of this before?

Once it’s on it’s way out then consensus is just fix it. Dr Tranny can prolong the agony....

Was planning on replacing oil and filter today, pumping oil in using a 12V pump, a vane type with orange plastic casing and zinc die cast body. Took the pump apart to clean and found fragments of zinc from the housing in there, as removed by the sharp edges of steel vanes rubbing on it. Not good, so no fluid change today. Ordered a different pump! Vane pump relegated to oil suction duties.

In all the boxes I've flushed, I've had no feedback to say the issue was made worse. However...

New oil isn't a magic fix, same as Dr Tranny. You may well prolong the life of the box, but at some point, it will need remedial work to repair properly

That said, we do have a forum member who suffered gearbox failure after a flush, but that particular issue was mentioned 8n a JLR TSB...
