well after that 11 pages here are my thoughts....
when i am in a forest the trees grow near vertical, if I’m on a hill they will not grow vertically. Now if I’m driving around a tightly wooded area and want to turn around a vertical tree, and my steering lock is not tight enough I am able to decide to rub against a tree or two, without damaging my bodywork and getting me through the tight spot. If this was on a hill, I would probably decide against manoeuvring too much as grip may be lost and I would no doubt end up resting against a tree that I didn’t want to be resting against, in an area of the car that was not protected.
Now I think that whatever you put on your car to protect it / recover it, there should be a decision made to use it. if I was stuck in a bog, I would decide to use the winch to pull me out, if I was sliding down a hill with no control I wouldn’t expect my tree slider to be in the correct location and the trees to have nicely grown at the correct angle to help with any impact that it had to absorb so I haven’t made a decision to use it for this purpose. Which brings me to my next point, I think that the tree sliders mounting plate has to be strong enough to distribute the forces applied to it to a few different points that it connect to the car (otherwise it’s pointless) so by default the mounting plate is made out of the same material as the rock slider and strong enough to do the rock slider job!
Rock sliders are generally below your car as you are more likely to use them whilst “cresting†than driving through a tight quarry, if you are in a tight quarry then it would rarely be flat and the rocks wouldn’t be near vertical. I would be reluctant to use the tree silders against a rock as most of the time, if there is rock, there is also grip and you don’t want to have grip on the tyres when you are trying to slide around the object....I'm Powered by........Diesel

I think the good debate has now ended - which is shame. Mods, I've pressed red, I think we should lock this now.
