as the "starter" of this thread i'd just like to thank ray, neil AND DG for all the info and help...
i have managed to ascertain the following,
1. rock sliders protect against rocks to the underneath of the sill
2. tree sliders protect against tree damage to the "side" of the sill
3. the "CAN" look identical
4. the possibly cost very diferent amounts of £££
5. i doubt i will ever need either so i dont REALLY give a monkeys...
6. DG knows EVERYTHING.....
thanks again to ray and neil one wife.......livid

Neil, I'd call that second pic a tree slider. I know the manufacturers don't, but they are american, aren't they?
Why you need rock sliders
Why you need tree sliders
(I thought this was a tame and sensible discussion by recent standards )

Pinky: Why? What are we going to do tomorrow night?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky - trying to take over the world!

Which is why I want them (edit: tree sliders) on the roof, too - to protect the upper door / body. I could just get a full roll cage, but they is dang ugly!

Nah. Rock sliders are Sill Protectors. Tree sliders are rock sliders / sill protectors with a bar...so rock sliders with a bar are tree sliders and sill protectors with a bar are tree sliders and that's not me in the wrangler. I have better taste
