I'm on hols down on the Great Ocean Road and even taking into consideration the fact it 'feels' far more expensive now than when I lived in Sydney for 4 months back in 2009, I'd still move out here in a flash. Best hope something comes of the 2 conversations I'm having about jobs in the next couple of days. BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

We've moved to Bilgola Plateau in Sydney 4 months ago and it's a 10/10 location for middle class families. We used to live in a nice area of West Midlands (Little Aston) but at it's best (those rare cloudless summer days) it was a 7/10.
Positives of the UK (that we can think of):
Variety of Culture, probably due to number of people there.
Chocolate doesn't contain additives to stop melting and thus tastes nicer.
TV shows aren't all American.
Low interest rates for mortgages.
Old (and ancient) architecture.
Positives of Bilgola over where we lived before:
Weather is so much nicer, it's Autumn here but was 29degrees and no cloud in sight today.
Relatively empty Pacific Ocean beaches five minutes one way and Pittwater beaches (sheltered) the other.
Low crime rate (36% lower based on 2007 stats)
Unemployement at 6%
Cleanliness of the place.
Quality of family venues available in Sydney(Taronga Zoo, Darling Harbour, Powerhouse Museum etc..)
Variety of Food available (my wife is into fitness through a former job and loves the variety of health food here).
Living in Sydney (Australia) doesn't automatically give you a great lifestyle though, it's just a backdrop that allows you to achieve it yourself.
But frankly speaking it's easier to have a great life here than it is in the UK and most of Europe White, poverty spec 4.0v6 model with Black 20inch alloys that previous owner fitted but I kinda like.

I think Australia is a great place, we have family and friends there. It is much more orientated to family life than here. The only drawback is that if you want to pop away to another country it's quite a long way.
I found the fresh food to be better than the UK because it is local and not transported all over the place. It is more of a outdoor life and plenty of variety.
In terms of house pricing, according to that series relocation Australia, I would be very happy with a 4 bed house with pool for the prices they found in some lovely area's.

I believe there's a change in the application requirements coming in July of this year, based on qualifications etc. Not entirely sure what the changes are but I think it's to do with making sure applicants are qualified, rather than just experienced. Depends on your job though I guess.
Not a lot of help I know but, may be worth considering.
Going on a sponsored 457 visa is good (albeit should something go wrong with your job and you leave, the 457 sits with the employer, so you have 28 days to leave the country unless you can find another job quickly). That's how I was heading out there 2 years ago had my company's bid for a project been successful. Sadly it wasn't, so I'm still here
Spent last week down in Melbourne / Victoria and it's reignited our flames for moving so we'll see. BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

Hi, I know about the July deadline indeed, I should have mentioned that here indeed, though proving qualifications would not be matter I reckon.

Indeed, Barry Island no less.
Even the clowns there talk more sense than she does, watching her on TV last week I couldn't believe just how incredibly dull she sounds when speaking. Julia Dullard more like. BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

We're off at the beginning of May. Family of 5, moving to Melbourne. We're going on a 457 visa, but i think i'll be looking to go permanent fairly soon after.
My wife has just come back from a reccie (following my interview over there in November), and we have a school and initial temorary accomodation setup, and also possibly a permanent house. The movers have quoted and we're getting them in for the last week of April. Now if only the buyers of our house hadn't pulled out..............
As far as the D3 goes, i'm going to sell as it simply is going to cost too much to take, tax and duty wise.
One question I have though, is my UK bike rack legal in Oz? If not then i'll have to sell that before we go. It's this one

Many thanks,

Probably more than legal. Lights arn't even required here. Just a bike rack number plate. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
