Just had a quote today for shipping my RRS to Melbourne, £1800 didn't seem too bad. It looks to be about the same in duty & registration when it gets there so we'lls ee what happens with the wife's job offer now. BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

Interesting that you think it's another £1,800 in duty and taxes. That could make it intereesting given the hit i'm going to take selling it.
I was thinking more like £4-5k, plus then getting it converted mile to KM etc.

Depends very much on the valuation given to the car by customs when it lands, from what I've been reading. Friend of mine took his 2007 HSE D3 to Melbourne last summer, cost him £1500 to ship, $3000 in duty & taxes when it landed and then a few hundred to get registered. Considering the loss he'd been looking at by selling here in the UK he reckoned it was worth it. Considering it already had 95k miles on the clock I think that's pretty good.
I'm reckoning on the £1800 to ship (from Karman shipping if that's any help to you, have been recommended to me), then $3-4000 in duty, taxes etc when it lands. I'm probably going to regret saying that but hey, gotta be positive. I think in the long run, it's a cheaper option to take the car with me, I doubt we'd be able to afford to buy another when we're there as the Aus ones are worth significantly more. Remember that as an import, it's expected to be worth less than an official Aus car, despite there being next to no differences. BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

Be careful not to underestimate those costs lads, here's a breakdown of my six series BMW from last month (duty and road tax can be reduced but all other charges apply):
Costs so far billed by Cargo Online:
Shipping costs: (£1,106) $1,852.07 - This is in a RoRo not container
Overseas Handling: (£25.00) $41.86

This basically gets your car into the country.
Then there's the NSW State charges (very similar for all States). I'm using a group called Complete Car Care, they've been pretty good so far.
Amdin Costs: $198
Import Blue Slip Inspection: $165
Obtain Complaince plate: $170
Transport Car to Weighbridge for weight: $154
Deliver paperwork for RTA registration: $198
Flatbed delivery of car to house: $264
Obtain Premium Plates: $92
CTP Green Slip (Compulsory Insurance): $461
Stamp Duties for Registration: $750 (estimate)
Obtain Registration: $446
Engineer Certificate: $385
Fuel: $88
Tolls/Travel Expenses: $33
Wash/Vacumn: $36
Total due to land my car; $14K or £9,350
Not included is Insurance as I have a corporate policy but add around 2-5% of car value depending on cover required.
(GBP) and $ are Aus$ ok White, poverty spec 4.0v6 model with Black 20inch alloys that previous owner fitted but I kinda like.

When looking at all those costs to import the prices of second hand discos in Western Australia doesn't look so bad, I'm due over there in the next few weeks on a 457 and will be looking for a D3 to purchase shortly after. Only trouble is the lousy exchange rate at the moment, but given that you're still looking at close to £20k over here for a good 4yr old model a £25k D3 over there is bearable.

I was in the same predictament as I owned a 2year old D3 TDV6 with low km. I decided to sell it in South Africa and buy a used one in Perth as importing my vehicle was far too much trouble. Also consider that when you want to sell it here it will probably be considered as a "grey" import D3 2005 HSE V8 model, snorkel, nudge bar, uprated tow hitch (12T), Goodyear Wrangler MTR (MT) tyres, National Luna battery box, Outback roof-rack, Takla seat covers.

I ended up with a D2a TD5 at the moment - the price of the D3's was just a little too high with all the other things that require some money at the moment. Hopefully will get some off roading in soon
