Oil scare...

Checked the oil on my 2013 D4 yesterday, and the level was "Below Minimum" Shocked

Checked the manual and decided that I should add 1.5 litres, although it was a bit unclear.

I was in Rhayader on a Sunday morning so no decent garages open, the only garage I found with some 5w30 was not the same spec as required in the manual. It was WSS M2C 913-B instead of the 934 specified.

So, I figured that some oil of the wrong spec is better than no oil at all.

Having added 1.5 litres, it now says add 1 litre.

I'm in 2 minds whether to just book it in for an early oil change. Its on 13.5k now. What do you all think?

Bring back the dipstick!

Why is it going through the oil like that, block absorbing the oil? If it was me I'd get it changed if sub spec oil put in (agree lower spec better than no oil), considering how tetchy these lumps are to the wrong oil.

Hmm...decided to check mine again the other day.....I've lost virtually none since April (check it monthly)....I'm sure new engines still "bed in" regardless of tolerances/bench testing etc,but that looks thirsty to me Confused

Whatever you do, don't say you've put the wrong spec oil in otherwise your warranty will be blighted forever!

Either way, get it changed as istr another d4 owner went by the fill gauge and manual instructions and put 5 litres too much in!!

Iv'e no idea why it suddenly used a lot of oil. There has been no smoke and it runs perfectly. From my investigation, it seems that the oil I put in only lacks compatibility with dpf equipped vehicles.

Looks like an early service might be in order.

Oil level sensor may be on the blink.

A drain and measure would remove all doubt.

Good point ref the sensor.

Bodsy, don't worry, I will keep quiet about the oil. In my defence, it was superbly expensive Mobil 1 !

I've done 7000km and the oil is showing half between min and max. I bought some oil at a LR dealer while touring interstate earlier and it was VW branded spec 5W-30 504/507. That was the oil they used. When I got back home I checked at my local dealer who said that the oil was OK as it was the correct weight plus the 507 for vehicles with DPF.

BTW, does the vehicle tell you when to add oil?

I have been since new. Castrol Activ 2T. I not concerned about it other than topping it up at some point.
Does the computer advise that or is it a guess thing?

Computer does not advise you by itself. You do have to actually go through the service menu and check it.

How long since the previous level check?

You don't have to answer that if you want to take the 5th. Whistle
