....which is a pita...allow the engine to cool down,approx 10 minutes from memory then go back out and check from,as you said,the service menu....wtf was wrong with a dipstick ? "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Since we're towing the camper it check it every 2 or 3 fills. It was full at 2000. then dropped 2 marks and now sitting half full.
I have a coffee and the owners manual in hand.

Agreed. Unnecessary complication. If they really want to make it so that normal drivers don't have to open the bonnet, why do they put the windscreen washer fill point in there!

When the idea was first muted it was to cover the case where owners did not check and would allow for a suitable warning to be displayed.
The problem seems to be in the implementation of the warning, or lack of. It would not take much effort to display the last stable reading on first start, should LR be bothered to complete the design.

My previous D4 around 13,000 mark showed suddenly it required 2 litres of oil.
Not quite believing this added only a litre and then it read full again.
Just thankful did not overfill.
It some recent conversations with both Landrover and dealer over service history being a bit overtime albeit on a very low milage was led to believe that somewhere under block exemptions legislation once a service has been carried out to the required standards then all previous issues that may of arisen from faulty workmanship or time issues becomes null and void and the warranty continues as standard for the rest of the warranty period.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

engines will & have to use a "bit" of oil...perfectly normal...not a high tech situation...old tech & quite usual...
this just goes to prove a point...

1) so it says you need more oil...false low level.....you do the obvious thing & add more....too much oil is not good for an engine...engine damage...big costs
2) so it doesn't say you need more oil....false OK level...you do the obvious thing & thinking its OK dont add more oil.....too little oil definitely not good for an engine ....engine damage....big costs
3) one possible good point it does tell you if you have too much.... that is if ..(the big if) the sensor is operational & reporting properly...RISK
remember.....the system just isn't capable of giving you a fast check...unless the engine is cold or left for a period......that period is indeterminate...& when it does can't be trusted..if we now have the notion its system that can fail or tell lies...with a 50k vehicle the opposite to common sense
so how do you check the checking system ?
you have a variety of options:
A) do nothing & hope for the best........you may get the worst...engine damage
B) do what your instincts tell you to do...add oil...maybe the wrong thing ...engine damage
C) take it to the garage...which in itself could incur engine damage on its way there.....for the dealer if so equipped can check the system...he couples the vehicle to to the Computer & this fundamentally uses the same sensor - gives some sort of report...whatever happens after that has the propensity for engine damage...
so accepting the fact
D) the makers may have installed the wrong dipstick possible ?....likely ?.....either way easy to check & doesn't need a dealer computer ....common sense
or
E) the dipstick fails (breaks)...which is sort of obvious as part of it may have detached & is laying in the engine sump doing no harm..you have checked the checking system....either way easy to check & doesn't need a dealer computer....common sense at its best
I pray for the day that common sense eventually prevails & the simple dipstick is available as an extra or a realistic or no cost option...a fundamental instrument ...no moving parts...no calibration...K.I.S.S. (keep it stupidly simple) technology as opposed to complex technology that can't be relied on to fail safe...
Often we see it as a joke or silly when we look at 3rd world instances of a simple fix or system...
here we have accepted a fix to something that isn't & wasn't broken...what a load of ballocksBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics

Seem to remember a good few years ago,there was a big hoohah about the Northstar engine.....closed and sealed unit that didn't need serviced or checked for 100,000 miles...that went quiet pretty quickly "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I had to add an extra litre of oil in my D4 when it was 8 months old, since then it's not needed any extra between services.
we also accept sealed gearboxes ...quite recently auto boxes had dipsticks too...
also a point to add additives to fix gearbox issues...BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics

OK, just put in 800ml and gauge shows full, and I'm all coffee'd up for the morning.
isn't the 'dipstick' the guy who services the car?

low usage just ticked over 9600 miles and its just over 2 1/2 years old

TBH a little bit of consumption is normal in my opinion. Especially on a new engine. Its just the complexity of the measurement, and the obscurity of the oil that bothers me.
