Sluggish pick up and a squeal!

Hi,

Typically, on hols in lake district and the Disco has developed a fault.

When I accelerate, it's slow to pick up until the secondary turbo kicks in. Then it performs as expected.

Under acceleration, there is a deathly squeal which stops the second I take my foot off the accelerator.

It makes the squeal if revved at standstill or whilst moving at slow speed etc.

A search on here suggests crossover pipe or induction pipe? It doesn't sound like air rushing. More of a metallic squeal I would say.

Anything I can do to try to identify it whilst I'm away? Got my IID tool with me. No lights on the dash (yet!).

Thanks in advance. James

I took a video of the noise. Seems to be coming from the front drivers side of the engine bay. Could possibly be a belt?

Maybe the sluggish pick up is due to me replacing the maf sensor a few weeks back. I noticed it didn't pick up very well after that. Maybe the pick up is unrelated to the squeal.

Hopefully this video will work.

Sounds like the secondry Turbo shut off actuator valve is stuck, if sounds like a trumpet noise when open the throttle then thats it.
Its an easy job to remove if you have the tools, mostly they can be freed off.

Is there a how to on here for freeing it off? Couldn't find one in a search.

Will investigate today. Thumbs Up

Big Cry Had a look underneath today... Doesn't look like good news.

I could be wrong (I often am, just ask my wife) but I'm fairly certain it shouldn't be leaking oil.

New turbo? Or can they be reconditioned? Probably not worth it.

This is drivers side. Is it possible to remove and refit without taking the body off?

Thanks in advance.

Updateto sluggish pickup and a squeal

Hi All,

Got the Disco back the other day having left it in the capable hands of RK Auto's in Tamworth.

Turns out to be a snapped exhaust manifold bolt. Body off, bolt out and all replaced, new nuts, gaskets and the like. Whilst I was at it, I've had the belts done and rear brake pipes as they were starting to show signs of corrosion.

They took photos and kept me up to date on the work. Great folk!

Fingers crossed for a few more years of trouble(ish) Rolling with laughter free motoring.
