Glad you’re getting somewhere with it. I believe I was lucky. I got my hand in the gap I created between the tailgate trim and the tailgate and pulled up and the tailgate then opened.
They always seem to go at most in opportune moments. Mine went in France, the day before I was due to pack the car with our luggage and large amount of purchases. And…..of course on the way through French border control they requested to check the boot!
Next bit of the job, replacing the actuator is the easier bit.Gary

When I was cleaning everything to put it back together, noticed this in the plastic cover …

… which I think is dried grease.
I reckon these actuators don't actually fail as in "break", they just get too stiff mechanically for the solenoid to pull the plunger back.
When I listen closely when operating the plunger back and forth, I reckon it's geared (some of you are no doubt thinking "no sh!t sherlock" at this point) and the grease for the gears has ceased to lubricate.
With that in mind, I'm going to inject a suitable grease/oil and see if it comes back to life BUT I'd also like to confirm it does have some sort of gearing system inside. Looking at the shape of it, gears would explain why it looks like two tubes that overlap.
Obviously, the only way to prove that would be to open it … which would then mean I can't see if lubing it fixes it.
Does anyone have one lying around they don't want ? happy to pay postage.
This way I can open one AND see if tuppence worth of grease saves the cost of a new part.
