Never had an LR electric tailgate, does it let you wedge it down against a load sticking out and drive? or does it throw a health and safety hissy fit at you?MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

The DS one can be stopped at any angle by touching the button or remote. If it encounters any obstruction, it goes back up.
I don't know what sort of force is required for it to change its mind. Bunging my arm in the way isn't an option.

I think we have all got to accept that this is not the car for people who use their D4's in the way they were intended to be used, it's just not designed that way. In LR's own words, the Discovery is now a "leisure brand" (yuck!), a car designed for people who need more space than a DS, but find something like a D4 too much to cope with and a huge culture shock after their BMW or Volvo estates.
Unfortunately for LR, for many of us, the void left by the D4's successor going soft is most likely to be filled by the likes of Isuzu and Mitsubishi.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Im still in denial.
That said, I've said it elsewhere if the void did open up it would most likely be filled by a Customised VW T6 4motion with seating and rear load space all designed to my specification.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I don't see how, D5 still has a sizeable load space, can still put dogs in the back, paving slabs or whatever. Yes the car that was shown has optional power fold seats and a smaller centre seat which isn't practical to some but we have yet to see the full range of options, that car may not be to UK specs.
The D4 is currently a leisure vehicle, many tow caravans, load it up with bikes or canoes/kayaks etc. I would say that's the leisure market?
The culture shock is not for those that drive BMWs or Volvos but to those of use that drive the D3/4 judging by the threads on here.

It fits the leisure market, but it's not a leisure brand.
The difference is that there are dozens of cars around that pretend to be practical, that are 4WD and offer some more space, but they are designed for the weekend follies of the suburban townies - they're "lifestyle" vehicles. The D3/4 will do the same but it goes further; it's the real deal and works for those who use their vehicles well day in day out.
What makes the difference there are the simple things like the split tailgate, damage resistance outside and in, chunky buttons, no electric everything, uncompromising boxy shape, capacity for modification, storage space for bits and bobs, genuine off-road ability and heafty weight. It's easy to see something like boot space as a scaleable factor, but every inch could be the difference between something fitting and not, so the attitude of prioritising it is very significant, and so is it with all the other aspects. A LR is about not having to make do on practicality.

If the bosses at Isuzu had any sense, they would be furiously working away on a 5 door, 7 seat ,big utility 4x4.
There is no no such thing in existance really, and there is a big gap waiting to be filled. I mean a proper utility like the d3, not a utility/almost a range rover type like the d4 and with a sensible price, not £50k plus
Not all farmers and workers want pickups, but most now want Jap reliability. Something like the mitsi shogun but not as posh or expensive.
If LR keep dawdling on the defender replacement, then surely someone is going to try get there first. Kia, ssangyong, hell even Dacia. There is a market there waiting to be tapped.

Is the change in style perhaps driven by economy regulations? I know the EPA is cramming some restrictions on MPG, etc. so is LR possibly bowing to the need to add aerodynamic qualities in order to satisfy those regulations for new vehicles?
