As per the above post, I am sure that the car knows exactly what mpg it's getting - it just 'improves' it for the fuel computer readout. That's why I wondered whether the software could be adjusted to edit out this fiddle factor.
Likewise, I'm sure that the car knows exactly what speed it's doing - it just adds a couple of mph for safety. Over-reading by a few mph is fine but under-reading is illegal, so most cars are set to over-read. Incidentally my old VW Touareg had some aftermarket Bluetooth software addded that also gave access to other engine and system data. This data included the vehicle's mph, which was always less than that shown on the speedometer and the digital readout but bang on that of GPS.
I haven't checked the D4's odometer against a GPS to check its accuracy but would expect that to be about spot on - there's clearly no point in over-reading on that and under-reading would be illegal. Again, my old VW over-read on the speedometer but calculated mileage precisely.

If you have access to a diagnostic tool such as a Faultmate MSV2 or similar, you can adjust the % variations for fuel and speed independently, so yes, it can be done in software.

Well it works on Australian D4's, so can't see why not. I've done it in my RRS, but need to readjust again due to the change in tyre size.

This is particular to using the MSV2, and I might not be remembering all the CCF parameters by their correct name, but IIRC:
There is a different (programmable) parameter for each of "real speed", "odometer" "speedometer" and "cruise control". These are to do with calculations from tyre size and the displayed speed offset for various markets. There is then a separate parameter for the "market" % differentiation for display of fuel consumption. From memory, for the Australian market, most are set to +7%. This can be reconfigured, but just setting it to 0% doesn't guarantee accuracy, as it depends on all the other above parameters as well. You have to play with it a bit (mine is set to -3%).

On mine Car says 30.9 mpg, true reading is 26.4 Peter

Yes, I found the reading to be very optimistic. Fortunately beside Faultmate, my IID Tool BT also worked to change the setting for my MY13 D4 such that it's now accurate. From memory, it was -3% (default was +7%) for my tyre/wheel setup.
