Feel for you guys over there in the UK - no such anti-4X4 movement here in Oz and I for one hope it stays that way.
Personally my house has at least 20 trees surrounding it offsetting my carbon output - and for 8 years I lived in London and didnt even own a car - so my historical and ongoing carbon footprint is miniscule - if anyone told me I couldnt drive my Disco because of my carbon emmissions I would tell them to shove it where the sun dont shine.

I thought my D3 had a carbon offsetting sticker on it to cover 40 odd thousand miles .....
Anyway, not much else tows a 2 1/2 ton boat.
Good to see most press comments are that this is a con-trick budget. Ha ha.

I was the Environmental Manager at a large plant in the North of England and I have to say that the evidence showing that CO2 emissions are contributing to global warming are true. The only potential argument is that this is a normal cycle and that all we are doing is accelerating something that would happen on its own anyway.
Having now decided that we are contributing to global warming, and that we need to reduce CO2 emissions to try and reduce our impact then I have to say that the increase in road tax is absolutely pointless. It only applies to new cars and anyone buying a new car can afford an extra £100 - £200 a year in tax.
Tax on fuel is without doubt the single best way of enforcing the 'polluter pays' policy as it means that those that emit the most CO2 pay the most tax. If I drive my disco 20000miles a year and another person drives 80000miles a year who is polluting the most? Why don't these people drive big 4x4s? Because they can't afford the fuel, not because the road tax is higher.
Is carbon offsetting pointless? No. If we are agreeing that CO2 emissions should be reduced then all you are doing is funding low carbon technologies and processes, thus making them more profitable and ultimately preferable. My decision to buy a Disco was in no small part due to the fact that LandRover do have the offset program.
Just my thoughts.

Simon you saidQuote:The government taxes the vehicle based on CO2 emissions not fuel efficiency.
I would like to point out that CO2 emissions are directly proportional to fuel consumption.
Currently the highest VED band Band G is for vehicles with CO2 emissions of higher than 226 g/km which were registered on or after 23/3/06. It is my belief that there should be additional higher bands, in say 50 g/km steps, that go all the way out to 600 g/km.
This would then permit the VED to be progresively increased all the way out out to 600 g/km rather than having a step increase for those vehicles above 225 g/km
As it currently is a vehicle with an emission figure of 244 g/km pays the same VED as one with 500 or higher g/km.

Carbon emissions is not why we have Global Warming.
You guys are missing the point.

I know that mate... but the RFL is NOT based on fuel consumption rates (MPG) but CO2 output. I agree they are related - and not directly in some cases.
Else we would be in a lower band with the TDV6. There are vehicles out there that will do same or less MPG but kick out more or less CO2.

I agree with simon - the D3 isn't a 'gus guzzler'. But those cars that do 'guzzle gas' like the Astons and the Ferraris - I'm still voting "no" to banning them because I can't see any reasonable reason for it; it would lose many people their jobs and careers, and quite frankly I love these cars and I want them on the roads. This whole climate change is just being exploited by the government to rake in some extra dosh (to spend on nukes and parliament buildings) and if people can't see that then that's their problem, not mine

I am not anti but I took the table from the http://www.4x4prejudice.org/ site (our version of the anti's) and weighted it according to CO2 output per km based on the fuel efficiency, hoping to make D£'s look better than depicted on the table on the site. Unfortunately this happened...
Arranged (Best to Worst) by Total CO2 Output based on the declared Fuel Efficiency of the car

If you vote on this poll it displays the current position of the vote like a vote on this site.
If you go back later you can vote again - and again - and again.. Do these votes count???
