reverse in and then you won't be breaking the part of the highway code that say's don't reverse out onto a road !! "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Had a very similar experience (albeit my scrape was caused by a pylon in the underground car park at our apartment building - which I have now hit twice ), I actually found that by using a pot scrubber (one of the green plastic ones not the metallic type and some dishwashing liquid) I got most of it off, then I took it to the local carwash and they seem to have done something magic and removed the rest of the paint, just some feint scratches on the plastic now. Not sure if this helps but good luck with it.
