17 inch tyres?

I'm almost due for a new set of tyres and I'm not quite sure which way to go. Most of my driving is on tar, but I have done a few trips (SA sand dunes, Lake Mungo, Vic High country etc) and I am considering heading up to Alice Springs, maybe up to birdsville and maybe even tackling the simpson desert.

Sooo, I am looking for tyre recomendations - bearing in mind the mostly tar environment and the fact that I will soon have a lot of worn but useful spare Wranglers. Its the one thing making me think to stick with the OEM's.

All advice appreciated.

I'd look at the 265/70-17 Goodyear MTR...

I'm running 265 70 17 BFG AT's, done just over 50000 K's and probably another 20 left in them and no problem whatsoever. I had them on for the CSR trip.

You could fit Cooper ATR's - about $275 fitted and balanced in Adelaide. Use the Wranglers for tree guards Smile

17" tyres

I put Cooper ATR's on and we did the Oodnadatta track then to Birdsville. On the way to Lyndhurst the other D3 punctured 2 tyres in 30 minutes on the rocky road. He had on the standard Goodyears. I didn't even like the Goodyears onroad as two of them would lose pressure slowly and would squeal on corners. They were not as good as the standard Michelin's that were always on the Disco's.

I had a look at the Goodyear MTR's but they are probably a bit aggressive for my 80/20 type driving.

They had 2 tyres that looked ok, an ATR and a thing called a Silent Armor. Anyone have any experience with them? The ATR is available in a 245/65 which I think would be about the same overall wheel circumference as the 235/70's on there as standard, so I could use the old tyres and spare as back-ups. The Silent Armor is only available in a 265/70 so I don't think I could use the 235/70's as spares? Anyone have the good oil on mix and match tyre sizes?

If you're going to mix tyres (never advisable), at the very least they should be of approx the same rolling diameter. Have a look in my gallery (under the 'docs' album) for a spreadsheet on tyre sizes.

Cheers,

The main thing I'd look for is a tyre with LT light truck construction, rather than passenger construction. This will give some of the structural strength that the 2.5 tonne disco deserves, regardless of the tread pattern...

ALl the best,

Simon

OK, some more thoughts (advice appreciated)

I like the Cooper ATR's and can get them for $260 each.

BUT

that tyre dealer suggested I consider the Mickey Thompson 245/70/r17 at around $300, which are light truch rated.

BUT

I kinda like the fact the coopers are exactly the same size as the standard so I can use the old tyres as spare spares.

thoughts?

I would definitely go with the Light truck construction - if you are planning on venturing anywhere off road - it is tyre strength that will let you down.

IMHO Smile

If you're prepared to look at 265/70-17 - there is also the Goodyear MTR - a great tyre for the D3 me thinks...

cheers,

Simon
