RRS is still a good car though, but the D3 is "brilliant"

I want to end that thread with "But wouldn't a D3 with a TDV8 be the ultimate vehicle" but I have not got the heart to do it 8)

That quote at the start of this thread is mine. As a family that owns a D3 TDv6 and a RRS TDv8, my favourite drive is the D3. It is more comfortable, more relaxed, more capable, much more user friendly and more "my type of car" than the RRS.
I think the TDv8 is a marvellous engine, but it lacks the smoothness, quietness and overall "pleasantness" of the TDv6. I imagine LR have deliberately tuned the power output curve and exhaust noise of the engine quite deliberately to achieve these characteristics. Hopefully if they put this engine in the D3, they will tune it differently to enhance its inherent smoothness, low down torque and keep the noise down to achieve a superbly powerful, relaxed and capable D3. Fitting dynamic response to the D3 would be the final nail in the RRS coffin for me and it would go in favour of a new D3
The one "fly in the ointment" for the D3 though is that the current TDv6 engine isn't as smooth or quiet in the new car (Feb 07) than the old D3 (Nov 05). The older car felt more like an electric vehicle than a diesel, and this was a huge positive for us. The new engine seems noisier - but we are hoping that will reduce over time (although at 5,000 miles already, no sign of this happening). Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Do you think so ??
I always found the D3 to be a bit more “wallowy†on the twisty bits than the RRS, with the Sport turning in more sharply into the bends & not rolling as much as the D3. Feeling overall more confident on the road.
I always feel tidier on narrow roads in the Sport than the D3, always being aware of the size of the D3.
I do agree fully with you that the D3 is more capable. But then again it is designed as a more utilitarian vehicle than the Sport.
There is no doubt though that both are very capable & brilliant vehicles, with each suiting a different persons needs in their own way

I agree, I was loaned an 07 model recently, and it was noisier and harsher than my Nov 04. Although it also was quicker and I could easily get the fuel average up into the high 20's without really trying. Mine is low 20's, unless I try really hard, which I can't be bothered about.
Having said that, it was a GS, and I am used to the cossetting environment of my HSE. The plastic steering wheel in the GS really does feel very different to the leather jobby in the HSE.
Its still a fantastic vehicle whichever year you have. In my current situation, I personally am going to hold back renewing my vehicle until something happens on the engine front. Either the 3.0 tdv6, or just maybe if pigs fly, the tdv8.

As an owner of both the RRS and D3 I must say that they are both great cars but each have their strong points. At the end of the day I prefer driving the RRS it is just better on the road. Loving the power of the TDV8!

The RRS was a bit beyond my pocket but was where I started looking, it's a nice car - and on reflection I am pleased with my D3 (glad I went down that way) and when loaded with our gear I am unsure if the bootspace in an RRS is big enough ? D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

There is quite a significant difference in boot space between the D3 & RRS alright.
We recently had a loan of a D3 & I had forgotten just how big the D3's boot is !

Ref my point that a D3 is a lot more car for your money - let me illustrate.
A RRS SE lists at £42,450.
A D3 SE lists at £37,595 which is almost £5k less (and we all know that that differential can be a lot bigger with a bit of haggle).
That £5k less for a D3 gets you (IMHO) a lot more car. More seats, more metal, more glass, more space, more gadgets, more gizmos, more features, more thought and more usefulness (which together add 50kg to the weight). Hell you even get Sat Nav, which isn't on a RRS SE. OK so the standard D3 is manual and the RRS is an auto, but that aside it makes you think the D3 is more car. I reckon that the D3 must cost Landrover more to biuld than a RRS yet they sell it for less.
I bet the profit margin on a RRS is much higher than a D3 and much of that is down to the use of the Range Rover name = premium price = premium profit.

A RRS SE lists at £42,450. Try Eighty Thousand Euro here in Ireland, that's £54,333.00 Stg plus the equivalent of £700.00 Stg to tax it each year !!
Smarticus wrote:A D3 SE lists at £37,595 An SE D3 will set you back £45,487.00 Stg here with the same yearly road tax as the Sport !

Not here it doesn't ! I also believe that the SE D3 in the UK comes with Leather seats & Xenons, is that correct ??
All of this adds up to……….
