No Worries BLF
I could go on for ages on this subject.
The fit needs to be tight - agreed - but it needs to be slack enough to get the Ball in!
That gives the crevice so corrosion starts.
As it progresses the crevice widens, movement starts, the oxide layer gets rubbed off exposing new steel to rust and on and on it goes.
It's self destructing
Keep all parts clean and greased up and remove it when not in use and grease the receptacle and put the bung in if you are sure it's clean, dry and greased.
That's what I do anyway Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it
Went back to Merc - C350 AMG

Our 2012 D4 has had a detachable tow bar fitted from new (part of factory order).
Disco_Mikey of this parish called by last week to replace the front brake pads. He reckoned that the noise I asked him to listen for was not the exhaust as I had thought but was due to play in the tow bar. Wife uses it to tow a double horse box on a regular basis. Mike reckoned the detachable wasn't suitable and to get back to the dealer and discuss a fixed tow bar.
Long story short - LR Customer Services say we should be using a fixed towbar and have authorised the dealer to replace the detachable with a fixed towbar FOC - it's booked in for Tuesday next week.
One question - no mention has been made of the cross member that has been replaced for others on here. Should I be asking for that to be checked (and replaced if necessary) ?

Well supposedly the action to test is suspended but going on the previous instruction the 3rd part of the test appears to establish if the crossmember needs replacing or not.
Bear in mind when reading the following that officially the testing is suspended and new instructions should be being issued to dealerships which may differ slightly.
Quote:
workshop procedure
1. check to see if towing electrics and/or towbar are installed. if not, place handbook supplement in vehicle, no further action required.
2. inspect the towbar.
if the vehicle has a multi-height towbar installed, place handbook supplement in the vehicle and release the vehicle.
if the vehicle does not have a multi-height towbar installed, carry on from step 3.
3. carry out a towbar mounting check (see topix workshop manual – body and paint – 502-02).
if the original detachable tow ball release handle does not point to the red area of the special service tool (sst) jlr-501-201, release the vehicle as no further action is required.
if the original detachable tow ball release handle points to the red area of the special service tool (sst) jlr-501-201, install a new detachable tow ball and carry out the towbar mounting check again.
if the new tow ball release handle still points to the red area of the sst, carry on to step 4 (please be certain that the sst is clearly in the red area as the crossmember replacement is an invasive procedure)..
if the tow ball release handle now points away from the red area of the sst, carry on from step 6 and install a new multi-height towbar (lr007484) (do not replace the crossmember).
4. install a new rear crossmember (see topix workshop manual – body and paint – 502-02).
to carry out the painting of the rear crossmember refer to the policy and procedure manual.

I would imagine the crossmember will be replaced. That was the first thing they said they were going to replace on mine before they decided to fit the fixed tow bar as well.
Really pleased with the job they did at Hunters Chester. Just wish I had a torque wrench strong enough to adjust it myself. 240nm is required, and mine only goes up to 150nm . Tried undoing the bolts with some ring spanners - not a chance

No it hasn't ...however it seems by some of the active posts here that some dealers may not have read their notification of this 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Thanks all - I spoke to dealer again and they are waiting for further info from LR, which chimes with what DG has said.
Having said that, the chap at LR Cust Serv seemed pretty clear that our detachable was unsuitable for towing the nags regularly so I will be sceptical to put it mildly if the advice is that, actually, it's OK. I know my wife has no intention of ever removing the towbar again between trips so it strikes me that a fixed TB is the only option (from the learned comments on here).
One more (possibly stupid) question - our car has the surround cameras fitted. Will they need to be recalibrated after new TB is in place ?

I was told by Hunters Chester that it had been suspended. Unfortunately for them, this was after they had started doing the work. It took a week for the job to be completed because there was some going back and forth with Land Rover and the dealership about it. They did the job in good faith for me because they had agreed to. Good timing for me thanks to this forum
