Thanks for the write up, I for one will not be going ahead at the moment as I want somthing that sticks out far enough to protect the door.
Thanks for going and having a look and thanks for the write up. Perhaps he will doa mod to cover this and we may still get there, will wait and see how things go.

So, went along to see Carl after work today. Thoroughly nice chap, and has a good amount of experience in sheet metal work.

The sliders looked to be of good quality for the price. The welds appeared to be fairly consistent and neat. Materials were as earlier a stated, 4mm plate an 3mm wall tube. He has used mild steel for construction, comensurate with the cost. Powder coating was well applied and even. The choice of mild steel will mean that corrosion will be a problem later if scrapes are not treated regularly.

There are two detrimental points.

1. The tubes do not protrude far enough to protect the doors from careless opening of car doors.

2. More importantly, the bottom seal strip on the doors stands off by about 5mm at the extremities, and about 10mm in the middle. Whilst these strips are not part of the wading seal system around the door opening itself, i believe that this will allow salt spray in winter to enter under the door more than it should.

I also suggested that he lengthen the tubes as far as possible.

Carl is aware of these points and is giving thought to how he can change the design to address them.

As for me, I'm going the hang on and see what he comes up with.

Thanks for doing that. Thumbs Up the key thing for me is to have them protrude sufficiently from the doors. Is he looking at doing this as well as other possible tweeks?

That's what he said. Could take a few weeks to turn up. It may also be that he gets different feedback at Peterborough and decides to carry on as-is.

Russell I have the britpart ones. They do protrude further than the door, but only just. Not as much as the pro-speed ones. I asked Robbie the same question when he removed his britpart ones for his Prospeed new ones. If I remember correctly he measured them and posted the depth on here somewhere.

Here it was.

I was going to ask the same question, they look to sit wider, even if only a tad, then my current sliders?

Curiosity compelled me to measure my original bars and the new Prospeeds from the flat of the sill to the outside of the bars. Quite a difference:

Original bars:

112mm

New Prospeed bars:

150mm

The extra 38 mm makes quite a difference as the bars are now wider than any part of the Disco (including the handles and upper wheel arches), with only the wing mirrors protruding further.

My best attempts trying to line up the front and rear wheels exactly:

Thanks for the hard work in investigating this gents.

I'm after something that protrudes a little bit more. Looks like It might be back to plan one which is the ProSpeed ones, once they've sorted out the inserts!

It would be hard to beat the ProSpeed design. Anything else is just a compromise between quality and price.

I know you're right Robbie. I've got an awful lot of their stuff and I love it. I was ready to get the sliders a few months ago but hesitated over the inserts.

I imagine I'll chuck my money down Ben's way as soon as I hear they have started shipping them. I don't mind if I have to wait a bit but too many people have had to wait an awfully long time to get those bits of plastic and if they take your money they should deliver IMHO.

I have spoken to the gent this morning and he has listened to Madrilleno and is going to get a set made up with longer/bigger protruding bars to come out far enough to protect the door.

Madrilleno has also come up with a plastic trim to be attached to the plate wall to ensure the gap is eliminated or reduced as much as possible.

Hopefully in a couple of weks time there will be another set to try which will cover all the things we have raised. If this works then we may well be back on with a group buy.

Thanks to the work done by Madrilleno Bow down Bow down keep an eye on this thread and we will see where we go. Thumbs Up
