The Land Rover Raised Air Intake is not a sealed unit. It does better protect the air vent though by its very nature. There is a foam pad that sits between it and the front wing.

Its more a case that you don't need to worry quite so much if you do submerge the air vent temporarily. I am told that the bow wave created water lapping against the leading edge of the bonnet is really as deep as you should go.

But then AndrewS was able to christen his ride as the Blue Pearl and now the Red Pearl after playing pirate ships in the Strata Florida Shocked

I see my RAI as added protection and not a warrant to go deep wading.

I can confirm this. I have just had a safari snorkel fitted. The kit connects direct to the air filter box and replaces the standard L/R plumbing that is not water proof.
BTW IMHO it looks a lot nicer too.

Gather round children.

In the early days both the LR and Safari raised air intakes were just that 'raised air intakes'. After some deliberation Safari decided to make their RAI into a Snorkel they achieved this by sealing all the holes and doing body mods. LR did nothing because if you go deeper than the recommended wading depth other things will fail.

Now its gets complicated. As you have seen D3s can wade into water a lot deeper than the recommended depth, however keeping the vehicle moving is the key. If you stop moving the vehicle will be engulfed with water. I think there is a water sensor in the air intake that will cut the engine. 10forcash please advise if this is so.

So the key is to keep the vehicle moving Thumbs Up

I was told this during my level one training day - was told it was a valve that slams shut when water detected in the filter box; and that I should only expect it to protect the engine if not revving the t*ts off it at the time.

I don’t think its in the filter box, well I have never noticed it. And its highly likely that water will get into the filter box as there is a water drain off in the bottom. I think the water sensor is between the air filter box and intake manifold. Hang on text sent to 10 Whistle

Indeed Andrew, and infact it is more case that you need to keep moving.

There is some sort of junction box/connector on the chassis rail on the LHS rear, just behind the air spring (to name one) thing that bring proceedings to a halt - I have been advised of this and a few other things to watch for when wading with D3. It has been mentioned before on here as it has caused a number of limp home mode/suspension related issues in the past.

If you are to seriously wade it would be worth understanding all the 'soft' spots and how to protect them.

And, I am sure that TFC has mentioned the cut-out thing to me when I have enquired about fitting the RAI.

So anyone want to give us a list of the 'soft spots' and a good guide to wading with the D3 ?

Might be useful for many here.

I think that AndrewS sums it the best to be honest.

I would imagine TFC will have the best set of advice ITR, but how extreme do you want to go?

If you really want to drive up and down rivers a la Camel Trophy 1990, get a properly prep'd tdi powered vehicle, and be prepare to get wet. Thumbs Up

And that means what in visual terms ? Up to the top of the front of the D3 with a bow wave ? Or more / less ?

More with an RAI fitted or the same ?
