Is this the same process for a D3 6 speed?

Similar, but not the same. There are guides elsewhere on the forum that show the procedure for the D3.

A good write up, but my days of crawling around under cars have long since departed.

Anyone know roughly what a dealership would charge for a full ATF change on an 8 speed ?

My MY12 is only on 30K miles, but half of that has been towing the tintent round Europe, so might be tempted to get it done this year.

I guess an indy would charge an hour or so of labour plus whatever their ZF8 compatible ATF costs. If you went to a main dealer they would charge a frankly shocking charge for just the ATF (over £50 per litre!) and probably run the rate clock for the warm-up and cool-down time too.

Robbie, i think I read somewhere else that resetting gearbox adaptations wasn't a good idea on higher mileage boxes with more wear. I'm going to give your method a go in a couple of weeks, and my mileage will be 54k. Should I reset or not?
Thanks
Darryl

16. The above gave me a fluid weight of 3.4kg which equates to around 3.9 litres. I used about 4.2 litres, albeit a small amount of this would have leaked out during the level checks. The fluid drained from my box was still green coloured and smelt normal. You do not want your oil to go anything near black as that means damage is being done. If you do have a diagnostic tool now is a good time to reset the gearbox adaptations.

Our cautions with very high milage boxes is that damage can be such that the adaptions have slowly gone outside of the normal range and effectively the gearbox is doing all it can to keep things going. Once reset the gearbox cannot adapt back to this extreme value. This may may trigger a fault or harsh shifts.

With regular ATF changes you can help avoid this and at 54k your gearbox will be fine with an adaption reset.

Nearly done the partial flush - just waiting for the gearbox oil temp to cool down for the last level check. Only about 3.4 litres came out and judging by the look of the old oil I'm glad to be doing this even at 54k miles Shocked my plan is to repeat in 6 months.
