I put mine in offroad to get underneath to drain the oil when doing an oil change, saved jacking it up.
But for access into the engine bay being in access mode can make it easier.
No need to lock in access mode. It won't raise unless the switch is pressed to raise, or the vehicle speed increases above the threshold, neither of which will happen with the battery removed.
