Update: recovery arrived. He tried to start it and it refused. Just turning over without firing up.
Stuck diag tool in the OBD port and it read "U0401" which is "invalid data received from ECM/PCM A"
He cleared it and the carb, started immediately. Then followed my wife home - no issues on that run.
Car is parked up, but I'm not convinced it is "fixed" - there was no Check Engine light showing when the code was cleared.
Will try to leave it parked up until I can give DiscoMikey a call.2012 D4 HSE for her

Mik, I'm pretty certain your car will be in the VIN range for the Crank Sensor/Trigger recall. Worth checking first, as it's covered under a recall My D3 Build Thread

Interesting - I did read a couple of threads regarding the crank sensor after the suggestion earlier in this thread, but nothing that suggested LR were covering the costs of repair? 2012 D4 HSE for her

We will wait and see, before you make a grovelling apology and admit I was right.

Don't think I'll make a grovelling apology as I didn't say you were wrong - just that the symptoms weren't as you described. It cuts out without any hesitation or lurching to warn you. Obviously I don't know what the issue is - so can't rule out crank sensor.
Mikey - will call you later.2012 D4 HSE for her

the good thing is if it's the crankshaft sensor, you may well get it done FOC. Depends on the service history etc.

Car booked into Dealership later this week for some diagnostics.
I only suffered this at <20mph, but twice when it cut out on my wife she was on the motorway. If she'd been on a bend at the time as opposed to a straight it could have been nasty.... there is probably enough residual vacuum in the brakes to bring you to a halt safely with servo assistance, but you lose PAS pretty much instantly when the engine cuts, and - as I was reminded yesterday - trying to steer a 2.5tonne car without assistance is not easy. 2012 D4 HSE for her

Replied to, hopefully you'll have a successful outcome, but it's the old story, don't count your chickens.
