HELP please - D4 - stalls and dies - will restart but with faults.

Wife's car so I don't drive it all the time.

Car died on her yesterday approaching some lights. Several attempts to restart (8sp box so button start), but it did start. Multiple warnings.

Came home and I stuck the c-tek on it for about 8hrs (til it showed fully charged). CEL light was still showing.

She had to pop out again today - same thing happened. Although it restarted immediately. Again warnings (gearbox and special programmes off).

I just took it round the block. Died on me twice. It really didn't want to restart. Eventually did start and I got it home.

The only good thing is the CEL has now extinguished.

I'm just about to go and check voltages with engine on / off.

We had a D3 previously so I know they can do weird things when the battery is reaching end-of-life. I suspect that is what is happening here?

1. Do you think I'm in the right area? Battery appears to be original LR - car is a 2012 HSE.
2. Any special requirements for a D4 battery? Thinking I might just pop to Eurocarparts and get a new one - worth the extra few £ to get it quickly.
3. Have read on another thread about performing a "hard reset". Wassat? And how do I do it?

Help much appreciated! Smile

I presume you've check that the -ve/earth straps and battery connections are all sound and tight?

Tanya seems to be the best to get the batteries from. Make sure if it has an AGM battery you replace with another of the CCF needs reprogramming as the charging characteristics differ.

Thanks MrH Smile

Body earth lead nice and tight. Can't see where engine earth is.

Battery voyage approx 12.65V at rest, and 14.5V engine on, so alternator seems to be working OK.

Do I need an AGR battery for the D4?

Battery depends on what's fitted, AGM needs to be replaced with AGM, non-AGM with non-AGM. If you have an IID tool or similar you can probably make CCF changes to change from AGM to non-AGM or visaversa.

New battery in. (With hard reset performed).

Too early to tell if it's fixed, but it certainly let me drive round the block - which it didn't earlier.

Unbelieveably the Check Engine light illuminated on my car on the way to Eurocarparts. Confused

The symptoms seem similar to the crankshaft sensor and ring going kaput? Crying or Very sad

You say it restarted a few times and now refuses to go, lights on th dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Did it start lurching in gear or hesitating a bit?

No - when it starts up it seems to run fine. Waiting for AA now as it's not safe when it cuts out - lose all PAS obviously.

Will see what they reckon when they get here.

I've arrived for support - just tried to start it and it did of course sprog into life immediately.
