So after a bit of mucking about regarding a visit from the WD engineer, they have approved the repair. Yay!
Now I have an invoice for the parts and one for the labour. WD say they are happy to pay both and are happy that I managed to get a deal on the parts for them.
Winning!

Well done
To be fair, as said above, it sounds like a very poorly worded diagnosis from the garage doing the work to WD when submitting the claim!
I would be having a word in the service managers ear about that for future reference!

Agreed, they don't really understand that their report is paramount to either accepting the claim or not. I can't believe they haven't come across it before??FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!

I've just received a call from WD to say they don't cover the pipe so I have to pay for that.
I told them that I had paid for the parts and it was actually £16 less than they had authorised so they said they'd take the price of the pipe off what I paid for the kit. I explained that the pipe came free in the kit so no one had to pay for it and they got a further £16 off what they authorised so now they're going to call Yeovil LR to get the price of the pipe to reduce the price further.

Sounds like they want some more educational redirection.
Phone WD and ask for a supervisor and get them to reconsider as they have messed you around enough and it will help restore the good will that has been lost.
Explaining that you have been posting on a well known forum and you really would like to report a positive outcome to all its members who are considering purchasing warranties. I.E. one pipe is potentially and worth a lot in good and future sales.
Don't WD have a blanket exclusion on all pipes and tubes?
When I claimed for the secondary turbo drain mod, they tried to reject it on the basis it was a pipe. I pointed out that it was part of the turbocharger and they finally agreed as the section in the warranty book stated "all turbocharger components are covered". I noticed in the new book I received at renewal this has been updated to state "all turbo components except pipes" or something similar.
