I fully acknowledge that older children have a harder time than we did but I don't think we do them any favours by not getting them to pay their way at least partially.

If you don't then what do they use their money for? They need to learn at least that earnings are not just for what they want to spend it on but also for what has to be paid for to live. In many cases it isn't until choices are forced on someone that they start to distinguish between "want" and "need". A neighbour's son was bemoaning his lack of funds as he was sticking a set of "go-faster" stripes on his fiesta.
A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Kids perception of value and cost is determined by how they are brought up. They can appreciate the cost and value of things without contributing to rent etc.

I can’t speak for other people, but my kids are well grounded and charging them rent or not won’t change that.

Car dealers that add on ‘paint protection’ to orders, without prior authorisation, and hope you don’t notice. Rolling Eyes

Would Sir like to purchase Here is a £900 addition to your order, which is unnecessary unless the manufacturer is prepared to admit that their paint finish is inadequate.

It’s the same upselling that you get when buying a pair of shoes and being offered a protective product to preserve the shine. At least they have the decency to ask at shoe shops.

I recall a certain LR dealership in Stockport asked me if I wanted the paint protection on a pre registered car with less than 10 miles on the clock. I told them no and they persisted a bit, but eventually let it lie. Later I discovered it had already been applied, they were just trying to recoup their costs.. Laughing

What happens when they move out? I wasn't talking about grounding but the flip side of earning being expenditure and contribution.

My neice lives in that world at the moment, but the harsh reality will bite sooner or later and then she will look back and hopefully regret wasting £200k on trinkets. My Sister indulges this image, my Sister's other half, doesn't.

They’ll be fine. They save, have pensions, run and pay for their own cars, sort their phone contracts, book their own holidays, deal with the tax office, manage their investments, GP, dentist etc etc.

Just because they don’t pay rent doesn’t mean they don’t understand things and can’t / won’t manage.

Maybe not, but it shows what’s possible with education and guidance. Also, amongst their peers they aren’t unusual, but thats a small cohort.

My daughters's are 19 and 24. The youngest has just come back from independent traveling / working around NZ, Australia and working on some amazing charity projects in Fiji that weren’t for the faint hearted! She works six days a week in two jobs whilst she figures out what she wants to do. Today she has to speak to her car insurer about a fraudulent accident claim made against her as well as sitting on the phone to the tax office because of an error one of her employers have made that affects her tax code. Real life stuff that we’ve all had to deal with.

The oldest is a paediatric nurse that sees and experiences things that many couldn’t cope with. She also takes unpaid leave to share her skills in developing countries. She’s just come back from a month in Tanzania and previous to that Sri Lanka.

Not sure charging them rent etc would make much difference to how they appreciate and value things, but we’re all different and I know my kids aren’t the norm.

What I would like to see is more life skills being taught at school and by parents. Too many kids aren’t prepared for the real world.

If one can afford cover one's kids' costs having ensured they understand the situation, that's great. As I said previously, I paid money in to the family kitty simply because there wasn't much money around at the time I started work. And when I needed help a few years later with my first deposit (having rented for a while), Dad helped me out in return as things had changed financially back at home. In effect, I'd saved with the bank of Mum & Dad even though it wasn't done for that reason at the time.

Some kids brought up by wealthy parents (and I use the term loosely as it covers range of household financial situations) turn out great, some are entitled little Censored that need a good kicking. That's down to parenting rather than the money available. There are entitled poor kids too, although how that happens is beyond me.

VW Tiguan Headlight Cost

I picked up a pheasant bird strike front of the wife's 2023 Tiguan a few days ago and thought nothing of it. I thought it had hit the wing/wing mirror but all seemed fine when I had a quick glance at it.

Walked past the car this morning and staring at me was a huge hole in the driver's headlight lens (you could put your fist through it) Big Cry It's an LED Matrix thing-me-bob.

Rang VW for a new headlight (told the missus £500 to £750 easy).

Wait for it .............. £2,004 including VAT Whistle Big Cry Shocked Daylight robbery, or in this case, night time robbery!

Insurance claim it is then Rolling Eyes

Priced up insurance on a low mileage D4 ---- £900 - 1000 ish:blub:

Cant justify it over the Volvo at £319 as a third vehicle, even though I can afford it.

Reminds me of one I hit in my company car back in the day. Suzuki Swift Sport (cracking little car). Pheasant hit the headlight and went straight through. Not much left of either of them! Also managed to slightly bend the leading edge of wing adjacent the headlight.

Surprising how much damage a 2-3lb bird can do when travelling at 60mph!

that was one of my fears with my 2017 Tiguan I had last year. That also had the amazing Matrix LED headlights that if i had a ''minor'' non structural front end accident the car could be written off just for the cost of the headlights and a radar

I was told that for my late 2009 T5 it was cheaper to buy an aftermarket sports exhaust than it was to get a new standard one. Luckily it was just surface rust and back box outer casing corrosion so not blowing. I just left it as it was until I sold it.
