in quality...plus
the steering wheel controls work the system (if you have them)
the sound output is far far superior... got to be heard to be realised
& a low cost USB in the glove box isn't on show or a big loss if lost or stolen
the Ipod hook up is preferable
you don't have a an Ipod floating around the car
the volume control on the pod is disabled...which if you are using the co ax connection you have to access to change track's BREXIT - done properly.

...your right the 4 gig stick doesn't work...a gig stick does (its been explained to me why by a data storage person from Seagate in 'Derry)
2 gigs is still a lot of tracks BREXIT - done properly.

Sorry to resurect this post but I have also been wondering if I can put MP3 tracks onto a DVD instead of a CD. Reading through the manual page 237, it says :-
Dual/DVDPlus discs
Please be aware that a new generation of DVD discs is being adopted by the music industry. They are known as Dual Discs or DVDPlus discs. They have digital music on one side and video content on the other. Current in-car audio systems with a front loading CD player may load and play this type of disc, however, it is likely that the disc will not eject and will block up the player. Such damage to a CD player will not be covered under warranty.
That sounds to me like it will play normal DVDs with MP3 data, but only warns you against using the Dual layer DVDs. Anyone tried it yet or will I be the first ?

I think LR are confusing the issue here.
What they mean by DVD plus disc is a hybrid disc which is a CD on one side and a DVD on the other side.
All clever stuff I know.
What they are saying is that the player MAY play the CD side but then it MAY not let you have it back!

DVD Plus discs are now down to a thickness of 1.5mm which shouldn't snag in the machine. But the head wo'nt play the dvd side of the disc and the discs are not writable yet ISTR ..so I don't see the point
...and why are LR confusing the issue DD?? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Yes thats my interpretation of it, but a normal DVD only has one side and if you burn MP3 data onto it there is no video data for the head unit to try and decode so it should play OK.

As DD has it. These disks are not to DVD specification (too think), so shouldn't be labelled "DVD".
In a similar way, you can have issues with slot-loading devices if you try playing the 'flimsy' DVDs that some papers are giving away at present (Associated Newspapers, I'm looking at you and your "Jazz Singer" disk - imagine being stuck with Neil Diamond forever). Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

DG, The point is I think that dual DVDs have a capacity of 8.5gb, normal DVDs 4.7gb. That may be why Landrover say not to use the dual layer discs, but they do not say you cannot use normal DVDs.

Yes but I thought the disco3 head cannot read dvd's anyway ...the laser wavelength for a cd and dvd are different ...no ?? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The wavelength will be different if the head unit is trying to read the VIDEO content, but its not, as you only burn MP3 data on to the disc. The head unit can read MP3. What is the difference between a CD and a DVD apart from the 700 mb v 4.7gb ? The difference is you CAN burn video data onto a DVD but not onto a CD. But if you only burn MP3 data onto the disc, what is the difference (apart from the capacity) ? Not trying to be pedantic, only hoping it can be done.

The type of data is irrelevant (you can burn video to a CD just not as much) as how it's used is determined by the software, it's all 1's & 0's on the disk just more of them on a DVD. CD's and DVD's use different lasers to read the data so at a guess the IHU only has the CD version in it
Basically, though they can contain the same data they are different formats even if the physical appearance is the same The End

I'm sure I would be right in saying
If you record a WAV file on a CD ROM disc it will play in both CD unit and DVD player
If you record a MP3 file on a CD ROM then it will only play on a MP3 compatible CD player such as LR3 or DVD player
A DVD disc full of MP3's will work on a DVD player
A CD unit compatible with MP3, I'm sure, will not read a DVD disc, the discs themselves are different,
The software/chip-sets to read the disc would have to be there, for example I have an old DVD player that will not read a photo disc nor CDG, yet the new one will,
just thinking out loud.
But I'm sure I may be wrong

Slimer, I hear what you are saying about different lasers to read the data, but I would have thought the laser to read data (MP3) would be different to the laser to read video content. The head unit has a laser to read MP3 data, that is all that you would burn onto the DVD. The paragraph above from the handbook, says that although a dual layer DVD may load AND play, it may not eject. They only say not to use dual layer DVDs.
I suppose the only way to find out is to try it.
