Well my V8 is just about to turn 150,000 miles, I had it for the last 30,000 miles, but have a folder with every receipt, MOT etc in. and ignoring the LPG issues, the only repairs to the engine have been an engine temperature sensor, and dipstick tube replaced, the later I reckon was broken when the head repairs were done.==================================

Our LR indie mechanic in LA who only likes to work on D3's, from his experience he finds the D3 4.4 V8 to be the most reliable engine LR has used in their vehicles. He sees the 5.0 V8's from the D4's come in with internal oil leak issues and needing replacement engines. But the 4.4 to be a proven reliable engine. Might not be the most powerful pushing the heavy D3, but reliable yes and not as thirsty as the 5.0.

If you are after the environmental angle consider this: In purchasing and continuing to maintain a 10 year old vehicle you are effectivly preventing a new vehicle being built and in doing so preventing all of the energy consumption and emissions associate with production. Also by choosing petrol over diesel you are very significantly reducing your diesel particulate emissions, and if you go to LPG it gets even better: Lower CO emissions than petrol and I read a statistic somewhere that the NOx and particulate emissions from one diesel engine are equivalent to 120 LPG engines....
now can anybody think of a good reason not to buy a V8
(However I may be just a tad biased in my views)

No way.... I had the engine temperature sensor issue. Real to change... I managed to stretch the job out to 30min. (20min spent cleaning the throttle body again)
Putting my V8 number plate on tonight.

Obviously I'm biased but I'd get the V8. My first had obviously been abused but my current one is pretty sweet .
Oh and my local Scania dealer informed me that today is international V8 day!

How do we get the extra 25hp that the full size RR 4.4 V8 (2006-2009) has, that is the question?

v8 has got to be crippling in mpg, I like it when my mate with a r/r 4.6 auto tries to tell me he can get 18mpg Im sure he can once in his lifetime maybe but in the real world of various road speeds/loads I bet hes not getting 10/12 mpg everyday.
I get a genuine 19/20mpg on my short daily commute in the tdv6 and will hit nearly 27/28 on a decent run.
Running around and rural commute, i get around 16-17 mpg on petrol, 13-14 on LPG, that's real figures not lieometer. Only time I see as low as 12 is hammering it or pulling the tintent on gas.==================================

Cant believe no one has mentioned the best bit, the sound when you really press the loud pedal
And the near silence when cruising is quite pleasant too.==================================

Although I've recently brought a tdv6 I was considering a v8 one long before this one I've brought came up. If I did it again it would be a v8. In my opinion the extra cost on fuel doesn't even come close to the money the tdv6 costs to maintain. The good old v8 seems to go on forever. And when it breaks. If it breaks. It's not as much to maintain. And also I have a 6.3 petrol merc and I've seen that return as much ( on a run ) than our discovery.

Mine's fairly quiet
Although with the RAI I can now hear the air induction when pressing the "go " pedal.

I should point out the r/r 4.6 v8 is a very crude injection set up with an ancient 4 speed auto.
My wife has owned many large capacity petrol engined cars and without exception they were all thirsty , when she went from a merc C320 to an Audi 3.0 tdi auto her mpg doubled on the same route/speeds etc and I reckon the diesel is quicker in the real world.
I ran a merc E430 auto for 18 months and if I drove it carefully it would just scrape 20 mpg and thats just 2wd and got to be a ton lighter than a disco?
Unlike the disco the merc would do a genuine 155mph and 0 to 60 quite a bit faster
