Such as? I think they are more reliable than the diesels.

If getting a V8, do the Jag 4.4, but outside of that I'd look for what seems to be in the best condition. That's how I'd choose.17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

Yes! The 4.4 V8 jag is the way to go in either a D3, RRS or FFRR. The 4.4 jag V8 engine is reliable, no crank issues.

Got a d3 v8 4.4 jag with 152000 on the clock which has been pretty reliable, odd issue with throttle body and the normal bushes etc but if you can live with the mpg they're a great versatile vehicle.54 disco 3 4.4 v8 now gone

The RRS 4.4 is a rare car though.
In RRS there are far more 4.2 SC available, very little in addition goes wrong, insignificant difference in fuel, but many more per mile.

For those of us living in high fuel tax areas e.g. the UK, the 4.4 petrol only makes sense if low annual mileage is driven. Sticking 20-30,000 miles a year under the wheels makes it a very unattractive engine.
If I was buying a FFRR it would have the 4.4 diesel V8.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The RRS 4.4 is rare because it makes no sense. It uses as much fuel, basically, as the 4.2 but doesn't bring much performance to the table. Replacing it with the 3.6TDV8 was a sensible move by LR. The TDV8 is as quick, if not quicker, but gives 25%+ better fuel mileage.
Having said that, a 4.4 RRS G4 would be a nice second vehicle / plaything.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

When i researched my purchase i did not see that the fuel consumption was 25% better than the supercharged but a lot of people said about the fact of replacing the turbos and the inlet manifolds on the tdv8 were bloody expensive and mine was defiantly quicker than the tdv8 off the lights the other day Discovery 3 se gone

I think he meant the TDV8 was more economical and faster than the 4.4 petrol
TDV8 is nice as brand new car, but not so attractive to own at an 8 year old car

We used to have a 2004 L322 FFRR Vogue for a few years. Beautiful car to drive and be driven in but ours was one of those horror story ones. We kept it for what must have been 5 years but only because it wasn't the daily car.
Main issue was a battery drain that we never got to the bottom of even when we finally sold it. It had the headlight washers / wipers replaced, parking sensors replaced, a suspension fault at one point, gear box issues, central locking issues, an intermittent bi-xenon headlight issue... and probably more that I cannot remember off the top of my head. It was a 4.4 Petrol V8 that never saw more than 18mpg. On a plus note, it was nowhere near as bad as the P38 we had a few years before that...
If you can, i'd recommend a much newer TDV8 unless you are willing to spend a lot keeping an older one on the road. I thought about the same when I bought my D3, for once head beat heart and I stopped looking at RRs.2007 Black Discovery 3 HSE TDV6 - Fully loaded. Thanks for the info and comments one and all. I'm thinking D3 is the way to go in terms of practicality over anything else

I have had a selection of LR vehicles over the years , I loved my td6 Range Rover vogue and I love my TDV8 Range Rover vogue
I love the discos but I'm always put off by eigher hearing of constant engine failures or constant gearbox failures
In a perfect world I'd have a disco 4 with a 3.6 / 4.4 TDV8 and 6 / 8 speed auto what a fantastic combination that would be
