How to change starter motor? |

Try these guys
http://www.bae-bristol.co.uk/
They sorted a real oddball alternator out for me at a very reasonable cost
Frapp
thanks Frapp - spoke to a helpful chap called - "Bob" and if i take the startor to them he reckons they can fix the solenoid
However, just got under the car and removed all the skid plates etc - there is now way the Starter is coming out the bottom of the car without removing what looks like masses of stuff including the sump.
did someone say removal was easy
can anyone explain how to do it, maybe with pictures please
MODS - can you move this to D3 Maintenance and Mods please

Confused??
are you replacing the starter motor or the alternator?
Alternator is easy once the viscus fan is removed ( no other way of getting the alternator out im afraid. 'Just because you're breathing doesn't mean you're alive'

Just dug this up from Character Dunc, know it dont help you on getting it out but maybe a new one is cheaper than you think?
"having just consulted me pile of invoices and found one dated 14/05/10:
LNAD50008OE - Starter Motor/042595 £128.49 (LR RRP £151.17)
Surcharge on above £70.00
so £128.49 (ie with 15%LR list) or less then great"

I remember that well Mikey.
Yes it definately comes out ...... that took almost as long as removing everything else when you lifted my body. It really was just a case of trying everyway through the huge gap below it! Joined the BMWX5 45e group

well, my starter must be bigger than everyone else's, cos there a lots of pipe and a metal bar across it, and its bolted to the sump.. , or thats what it looks like - a bit difficult to see lying underneath it when bits of dirt and stones keey dropping in my eyes and mouth
how much of the other stuff need to be removed, or will it wiggle itself out ?
Transformer, spoke to a chap at yeovil and he quoted £150 + vat for a recon unit. i'll see what bae say - they can get me a new one for £200+vat rather than the LR £300 plus vat Duncan

Looking at the workshop manual, it wouldn't appear to be that much of an issue once you have removed some panels and the undertray.
Extract here http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...emoval.pdf
Mind you - it doesn't say how to get it out once you have removed the mounting bolts

I seem to recall a few small items being moved, is it a small fuel cooler near by and some other small bits? Not sure if they have to be moved but it did seem to make it easier for Mikey when he took mine out. Really is a case of trying every way, it is certainly a tight squeeze.
Even when standing under a ramp with as best access as possible it wasn't easy, (well it was for me watching Mikey) Joined the BMWX5 45e group

got the car down to the garage this morning. took them about 1 hours to clear another car off the lift and then looked at mine straightaway.
Id removed the under body protection so it was a case of uncliping one of the cooler pipes, moving the cooler and moving the fuel filter.
It took them about 1/2 an hour to get it out after a bit of swearing and a face full of antifreeze
I then took the starter down to www.bae-bristol.co.uk , who took a look and within 30 mins had tested it and isolated the problem to a knackered solenoid - the main motor was fine.
they will be getting a solenoid in tomorrow at 0800 and I should have it back before 10:00 Cost = £70 inc vat.
I then need to drop it into th garage who will refit whilst i wait
a lot better than £300 plus VAT - plus labour..
It would have been extremely difficult doing it lying down - however, now ive seen it get removed, i could probably have a go myself if it ever fails again..... Duncan

I remember reading in an old LRO mag, there was a feature on the VR/CAD design studio at LR HQ...
The same issue came up, "is there enough space to get a Disco 3 starter out through the subframe?"
The answer was "Yes, but you have to know which ways to turn it"

Top marks to bae and Carcraft, Whitehouse Lane, Bedminster for an excellant fast response and turnaround.. They did say their best customer takes priority
starter fixed for £70 and £80 labour to remove and refit
